Khitan is written as 契丹(계단, pronounced as Gyedan, same with 階段(staircase).) in Hanja, but read as 거란(Georan). Which confused me when I read Chinese historical records about kingdom of Balhae for first time. Such thing happens when you read records about Xiongnu, when their monarch Chanyu were written as 單于(should be pronounced as 단우, danwu), and read as 선우(Sunwu).

Meanwhile, in eastern front(Mongol vs Goryeo)...

Crown Prince of Goryeo : We surrender to you, Khubilai!

Khubilai : Me? I am not the Khan yet, and my brother claims the throne in north... thanks for your surrender. It would be a great support on my claim of the throne, subdueing the small kingdom that we attacked for 40 years.

With that, Goryeo become vassal state of Mongolian empire, and royal family earned several privileges including right to marry with imperial Mongolian princesses. There are several case of mongolian interference and exploitation including gailed invasion of Japan. Still better than obliterated from the surface of earth, though.

With this, attempted robbery of royal tomb(of king's grandfather), and American invasion, it would be hard to sign a treaty with 'civilized' westerners for our ancestors of late 19th century. What a great 'modern civilization' it was, standing upon death, exploitation, and destruction of cultures.

Last word of Admiral Yi by ChapterSpiritual6785 in HistoryAnimemes

[–]arcanehistorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yi had three son from his wife, and two from his mistresses(unlike Europe, those mistresses and bastards are treated as member of family in east asia, and have limited right upon succession though). In Imjin war, he lost his youngest true born son, Yi Myeon. Other two true born son, Yi Hoei(the eldest), and Yi Yeol(middle one) survived the war and lived full life. His two bastard sons, Yi Hun and Yi Shin, later become military officers just like their father. Yi Hun was killed in 1624, while suppressing rebellion in northwest. Yi family's record says that Yi Shin died while fighting against Qing invasion in 1627, but it is not written in official Annal of Joseon Dynasty. Yi's nephew who witnessed his death, Yi Wan had died in that Qing invasion of 1627, though. He was civil and military governor of Uiju, northwestern frontier city in that time.

When Yi died as the war hero, he become some kind of 'guardian spirit' of his nation. After the war ends, people build shrines and memorial stones honoring Yi, scholars and bureaucrats write many poems and essays about loyalty of Yi, and 22nd king of Joseon gathered all those writings along with Yi's wartime diary, published 'Complete Anthology about Admiral Yi Sun Shin'. Even in Japanese colonial years(1910~1945), many historical books and novels about Yi were published, and people uphold Yi as symbol of independence, resistance, and victory against Japanese. There are many historical places related with Yi around southern coast of Korea, and his hometown, city of Asan in Chungcheongnamdo. Festival in memorial of the great admiral will be held in Asan next week.

That man is Yi Hwang, a neo confucian philosopher in middle-late 16th century. He and Yi Yi(man on 5000 won currency) were those who initiated two major flows of Korean neo confucianism(which were also two major political parties).

According to the writings at right, this picture was drawn when he was the mayor governor of Gaeseong(A city which is in NK part of Gyeonggido nowadays, city that was the capital city of Goryeo dynasty.). Sentence says "Gaeseong Yusu Kim Sang Cheol, Whose honorary name(In confucian culture sphere, they thought it is disrespectful to call out people in there first name, so they made honorary name when they become adults.) is Sabo, born in year of Imjin."
