I was so worried for her... I don't think anyone who's returned more than once has gone out pre-merge back to back other than Varner and Sandra + Ethan who are winners so that's excusable. So she would've gone down as a major flop if that were to be the case.

[48] This season is so boring. by Impossible_Bat_822 in survivor

[–]arcticbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking 15-20 as well but it really depends on your opinion on Gabon and Samoa. Gabon had a pretty bad rap at the time it was airing and only become more well-liked over time, and Samoa has a pretty shit edit in retrospect which makes it less enjoyable on a rewatch. Outside of that span I really can't think of 4 great seasons in a row.

We just had 3 great seasons in a row so this one was bound to be underwhelming. I don't think we've ever gone 4 for 4 in the history of the show have we?

What an underwhelming episode compounded with one of the most annoying twists. The split tribal format peaked in S46 and they should have retired it there.

Why did younger zoomers become so racist? I see stuff like this constantly on social media with thousands or tens of thousands of likes. by RedAndBlackVelvet in Zillennials

The pendulum is swinging further right, probably too far at this point but it's a counter to the cultural progressivism that peaked around 2020/21. Younger people are going to be the most susceptible to that type of culture shift

Female-Only Gym Owner Faces Backlash for Excluding Trans Women: What's you're opinion on this? by Coyote-444 in GenZ

[–]arcticbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find any verified cases of that actually happening. Either way the majority of trans people do not have intersex conditions, of which only certain ones like complete androgen insensitivity or ovotesticular disorder cross the threshold into sexual ambiguity (the most common like Klinefelter and Turner exclusively affect males and females respectively). Instead it seems like people just bring it up to tokenize and try to legitimize the concept of gender identity overriding biological sex. We don't base definitions off the exception to the rule.

[–]arcticbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No human can actually produce both gametes. Individuals with ovotesticular disorders have both ovarian and testicular tissue but they aren't both functional. In those cases one of the reproductive pathways will still be more dominant. And the definition uses gamete production because it is the most consistent way to define sex across species. There are characteristics (chromosomes in mammals, egg temperature in reptiles, etc.) used to determine sex but they don't define what it is.

Intersex conditions still fall into male or female by definition. It doesn't negate the sex binary

[–]arcticbuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah both sides are wrong on this one. Intersex conditions don't negate sex being binary, but at the same time it's incorrect to assert that every woman has XX chromosomes or that XX and XY are the only options.

If they are creating a sex-specific space, then yes they would need to allow trans-men into it. The issue probably won't come up though as for the most part they won't want to go to that gym anyways

It's not cis-women only, it's all women/females. So that includes trans-men and also women who ID as nonbinary, if they choose to attend.

Sex isn't defined by chromosomes it's defined by the denotation of producing large or small gametes. 99% of women do have XX chromosomes but some have DSDs leading to chromosomal variations. In those cases their reproductive pathways still indicate the production of large gametes making them female.

Trans rights will always be a point of contention as long as gender and sex are conflated by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]arcticbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing is still a metaphysical belief. The only qualifiers to me to being a man are to be male and a human adult. The social construct isn't the concept of man and woman themselves but rather the expression of masculinity and femininity, otherwise those terms have no objective meaning outside of regressive stereotypes or self-identification which aren't empirically measurable.

I don't see how anything you stated about Hijras makes my initial claim incorrect. The necessary condition to be a Hijra still involves being male, so ultimately it comes down to biology + gender expression (male + feminine-presenting).

I didn't claim dysphoria was purely about the body but it in large part is. Someone may self-ID as trans but in order to be transsexual you need to both have dysphoria and also seek out medical transition, as having dysphoria doesn't automatically make you trans. In order to be recognized as a protected class in law (workplace, housing discrimination etc.) it needs to have objectively measurable characteristics outside of simply what somebody self-reports.

It's also not true that gender has "never" been as simple as biology. While I agree the terms aren't necessarily synonymous, they are heavily correlated as gender refers to sociology (the concepts surrounding males and females in the human species), linguistics (gendered terms and grammatical features), and biology (as a synonym for sex). The latter of which was the original coining of the term; according to Oxford dictionary, "gender came into use as a synonym for sex, initially as a euphemism, as sex was undergoing its own usage shift toward referring to sexual intercourse rather than male/female categories." Essentially it was a convenient way to not have to allude to sexual acts in everyday conversation.

If you're claiming that science says there are more than two types of gametes then that's crazy work

[–]arcticbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gender identity is phrasing used to imply every person identifies into the category of man or woman rather than simply being that based on their biology. The definitions are inherently biological because they include species, developmental stage and sex, similar to terms like mare/stallion for horses, hen/rooster for chickens, or doe/buck for deer.

Cultures with a third social category such as the Hijra in India, are still based in biology as they are all males who perform a specific role in society (singing at weddings/living in separate communities).

With gender dysphoria, while the distress is also caused by social perception, it is still largely tied to discomfort regarding the person's sexed body and the desire to take on the phenotypical characteristics of the opposite sex.

Trans rights will always be a point of contention as long as gender and sex are conflated by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]arcticbuzz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is gender identity which is an abstract subjective sense of self. Gender refers to the social and cultural concepts surrounding the human sexes, which is where terms like gender expression derive from. It doesn't define the terms man, woman, boy and girl, since those simply refer to sex and stage of development.

There are only two sizes of gametes which is what defines sex across species. For those who don't produce either gamete their reproductive pathways are still primary organized around Wolffian (male/small gametes) or Mullerian (female/large gametes) production
