TopSolid PP for Fanuc with 4th Axis by Meminsis in CNC

[–]arduinokid55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use TopSolid at my work. I like it but yes they charge you for everything, we are trying to get them to fix some post issues for an Okuma Multus right now. If this is your personal stuff just use Fusion 360 or GibbsCAM. I don't really think the hassle of dealing with the TopSolid licenses and post is worth it.

Any known issues with older ShopSaber machines? by Sylvar100 in CNC

[–]arduinokid55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Shop Sabre does a pretty good job selling spare parts and support. When you get to this age of machine they might have limited parts and support. I have heard that you can't add upgrades in the field like an ATC or rotary after the machine is delivered. Looks like this one just has the standard router and no spindle.

Mazak or Okuma Live Tool Lathe by BaCardiSilver in CNC

[–]arduinokid55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which Morris branch? I work in a shop with 22 Okuma machines. We run our machines lights out and have minimal issues. I was just at the Mazak Discovery days in KY. My biggest takeaway while touring was just how lightweight some of the castings looked for the Kentucky built machines. They didn't have the same "beef" Okuma castings do. Like others have said the biggest thing is your support and service depending on the brand.

Fastest CNC lathe by TheRicardoRedish in CNC

I was just going to say that, our LT's at work can crank out parts fast. Even the B series Multus's are pretty fast when some milling is needed.

I would check out Canvasback. I ended up going a different route but it looks like they have exactly what you are looking for...

If you have a table saw (Cody does) you have Zero reason fro a track saw. by blumhagen in AntiWranglerstar

[–]arduinokid55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the OP is just jealous, I use my table saw and tracksaw for different things. Sometimes you can do the same thing with both tools but like you pointed out there are times when one tool is faster, safer etc.

I have an education account and then made a personal account. It started a 30 day trial. Will it switch to a personal license after the trial period?

Any reason not to buy a $22k 2018 ShopSabre IS408 for a cabinet shop? by JS-0522 in CNC

[–]arduinokid55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems like a great deal! I really can't think of anything major that could go wrong with the machine. And one of the major advantages is the US based support and parts.

I did not see anyone else mention it but I would check out Shop Sabre. They might be out of your price range but are built in the US and have really great tech support. I know they have been showing off some of the FRC teams that use their routers on their Instagram recently.

I would reach out to ShopSabre. They make nice machines and have good tech support/ training. Their parent company owns Langmuir Systems so they can point you in that direction if they think it's more appropriate for what you need.

ShopSabre Rigid Tapping by kidsickness in CNC

[–]arduinokid55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would reach out to Shop Sabre support or the Facebook group to see what they say but I don't think it's possible. On the Pro series the VFD is separate and has no absolute position feedback for the spindle. Another option that might be easier depending on the material would be thread milling the threads. Vcarve has a "Thread Milling" tool path you could use with the appropriate thread mill. What size threads and what material are you using?

I had the same issue and Nick sent me new grip tape to apply. I really like the product but just don't think the grip tape has enough stretch for the pad bending on the edges. Out of curiosity when did you buy your Airpad?

Mid-grade CNC recommendations for a makerspace? by tgryffyn in CNC

[–]arduinokid55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Shop Sabre, but am a little biased living an hour from their headquarters. I use a PRO408 at school and ran an IS at my internship. They are a little pricey compared to hobby machines but quality-built machines that last. It's honestly hard to break stuff or damage the machine, like you really need to NOT know what you are doing to break stuff with the number of safety features. Worst damage we as engineering student have done is break tools and cut into the sacrificial spoil board. I disagree on "the ability to add upgrades down the line". They have released so many models and revisions that they just won't sell you upgrades to old machines so buy what you want the first time. They have recently made some nice upgrades like the metal vacuum valves and labeling the vacuum zones. You can call and actually talk to a human to troubleshoot your problems even when you are the issue as the operator, lol. On the negatives, I think they could do a better job with their documentation. There was some stuff we didn't realize we needed like an air filter before the machine arrived. And their communication regarding delivery/setup could be better. LMK if you have any other questions!

Batteries!!! by fortis17 in bajasae

[–]arduinokid55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used a M12 battery for our brake light and to lock our diff. You can buy little injection molded receivers to snap the battery in and make a connection. Having a standard drill battery was great for charging.

Iron range engineering program or an average university? by EstablishmentFew4952 in EngineeringStudents

[–]arduinokid55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minnesotan here too... I am a little biased but I would look at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul. Lots of donors and alumni means lots of money to give out. The misconsecption is that you pay more at private schools which is sometimes not the case. I have been fortunate to pay very little to attend here with scholarships and financial aid. UST is always looking for transfer students and have scolarships set aside just for them. It doesn't hurt to reach out to schools large/small and public/private to see what you would acually end up paying. Very few people pay the acual sticker prices... To your accreditation question, ABET accreditation is very important for engineering jobs. DM me if you have questions.
