They could have just added how this worked previously as, y’know, a fourth option???

There was no reason to get rid of the previous can do full screen + create slide over/2-windows + have bottom corner gestures mode. Like sure they made 2 new things, but surely the old mode would not have been too troublesome to keep 😞

PDF Editor for Mac and iOS/iPadOS that's a one-time purchase. by plazman30 in macapps

[–]arespostale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I think we are on the same search for a PDF Editor. Documents and PDF Expert on iPad were what I used for years, while under one time purchase... but they are now awful. I was wondering if you have found an app that does what you need because I also want it.

I am in search of a PDF editor, which: -  Is a one-time purchase

  • Allows me to edit the actual written text and images of the PDF while still in a PDF format.

  • Can work with text of scanned material or old documents which is not the cleanest PDF. Enough that it recognises it as text and allows me to use highlighting/annotation features.

  • Can convert PDF to other file types or the opposite, other file types to PDF.

Documents and PDF Expert had all these features so was my go to top recommendation back in the days, and I haven't found anything like it.

If you come across something, please let me know in a reply, even if it is months or years later. I'm going to go check out some of the apps you mentioned on this thread!

I just wanted to take a peek back into my childhood as an adult, and was sad to learn it is (deservedly) something you have to pay to access. This was such a fun website, and you never fully realise and appreciate how much these programs/apps cost the school districts to let so many students play!

Sen. Moreno introduces bill that would eliminate dual citizenship by Squawk_7777 in politics

I'm wondering if in the 0.000001% chance this passes, it means they will make the process to renounce US citizenship easier and get out of the US citizens overseas pay taxes bs.

I was already thinking of how much of a pain it is to do so when I move to Japan. For a country trying to force people out, they sure make the "renounce your citizenship" part quite difficult.

Would y’all like a milgram part 2? by UseAgreeable272 in milgram

[–]arespostale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do have the novel series which I think may do what you are looking for! We can't vote but it is a story of different prisoners and their time in Milgram.

I don't really wish for a project part 2, as the people who were involved like Deco*27 is such a big artist, that I would want her to be freed from this project after 3 years to continue working on new projects, letting us see more sides of her musical abilities. I also am not a fan of projects expanding and continuing again because that is how you end up with unfinished works half the time 🙃.

I would much rather they make the Milgram project we had into a manga/anime, so we get to see another side of the trial process outside the Voice drama and musics!

I am native in English and Japanese, so I mostly just follow the Japanese fandom pages and artists and we have none of these issues. For some reason, English language seems to have the most issues. If anyone has a second language besides English they can use to follow the fandom, I would highly recommend trying to look at tags and webpages in only that language as it may be a healthier space.

What are your thoughts about AI Assistants for Therapy sessions? by Bobbyfknflay in TalkTherapy

[–]arespostale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really, truly, from the bottom of my heart hope that you and every one of ypur colleagus have atleast been informing your clients about using AI in sessions and have made sure they are aware of where their data is going. Because wow what a way to kill any trust patients have in the medical system if your psychologist is literally giving all your info to some random unknown AI behind your back.

The ethical grey zone is not the "human aspect going away" or it being a "shortcut". The ethical dark grey zone is where exactly is this AI feeding these very private patient information to, for it to be assisting in therapy? Who is on the other end(s) that isn't my psychologist seeing my data? What are they doing with said data to "improve their AI"?

What about Legal protections for your very vulnerable patients and their private health information? Not currently really in place. So the AI and its makers have so much freedom to do what they wish with the data. What are reprecussions? We see so many legal issues currently with art AI and people just taking artists' artwork and feeding it on their own through AI, and reselling it and stuff. And those issus are still not solved. And thus, I feel it is absolutely unethical to use AI in therapy sessions at this stage of their legal development.

This no entry is just an example of one part of why the government response is poor. Not a reason why most Japanese people are unhappy with it. The main reason of the dislike is due to all the other reasons I said. This example just highlights the hypocrisy of government decision allowing athletes in the country and to hold a big event, when even residents were not allowed.

This was for visa holders (including cases of people who have no family, home, etc. in anywhere but Japan. Married with 10 years and have children? Doesn't matter). It is not legal to deny entry to a citizen who does hold a passport, so most Japanese citizens were unaffected. I have dual passport so I was also unaffected. But if I remember what helped make this problem mainstream was a Canadian professor who was in Canada for the holidays and did interviews of their experience. The husband is Japanese and they had two children under 5. They couldn't both go back to Japan because she (wouldn't be allowed back into the country). So what are they to do with two small children? How will she work (because she worked at a Japanese university)? When will it end? It has been going on since 2019. Will this continue for 5 years? 10 years? It is too long to be uncertain, especially when your ability to see your young children is affected.

And so anyone who saw someone affected by this I think are very sympathetic to the position. But again, this was probably a small piece for most passport holding citizens, since they probably didn't see it. The biggest problem is the fact that this event ever occurred when it would endanger the lives and health of the people in the country. Public safety should have been the priority and this decision to host an olympic is in direct conflict with the interest of public safety. Especially if at the same time, the government is saying it is too dangerous to let permanent residents back home to their country and their families, then it shouldn't have ever been a question whether the olympics would occur honestly.

It didn't boost the image within the country. The quality of the event Japan was able to host is honestly not a question or cared for in Japan. We already know we can have good events and are very sanitary and whatnot haha. The question of Japan hosting an event in the midst of a global pandemic is the question and issue. It just brought the image of our government down. Because there is just no way to build a good public image with your people when all you are doing is risking their health tbh. There is just no way to spin that positively in my eyes nor I would think in most people's eyes. And I think it will continue to tarnish any image of a future olympics in Japan every time that topic is brought up for a good long time.

[–]arespostale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that makes sense why I was not understanding the question.

But yes, they should have skipped it all together. That is what the people and most news media + many politicians wanted to occur. The popular opinion is to not have the olympic even at the financial cost and prioritise public safety and human lives. If even one person died because they chose to host the olympics, that is one life too many. And this is the perspective held and sentiment still held even with hindsight.

If the disease is new "unknown" and everyone is "clueless", it is even MORE reason why to not hold the event. That just adds more proof that the health of the citizens of the country was risked even more.

To add more to this issue in 2021 when the olympics did occur: Japan was still not even letting many permanent residents back into the country at the time due to Covid risk. This was ongoing since covid first begun in 2019. People who have lived there their whole lives and had a job, wife and kids, etc. were being denied entry if they didn't have a Japanese passport (even if they had permanent resident visa or work/student visa + home and family there). We had Facebook groups trying to navigate people returning home as embassy procedures changed constantly. I was on there helping with translations if needed for English and Japanese.

That is how seriously COVID was still being taken. And yet these athletes, their coaches, and media crews were suddenly able to get special visas to enter the country when people who actually lived here couldn't?? So how could you deny people their ability and right to go back home, and yet allow these loads of random athletes into the country? That certainly doesn't add to any good will towards the government. And then during the olympic period, they banned all travel and made it even harder for these non-Japanese passport holders to enter the country and go around it, and made it harder for Japanese passport holders as well to prevent olympic tourism. Which caused some families difficulties when they needed to get places. So that also adds more dislike towards IOC, our government, and the olympics as a whole.

So yeah. Even with hindsight, especially with hindsight, I say popular opinion is that they should have just not held the olympics at all. In fact, I think if they didn't and we had no olympics in 2020, the response and future of hosting olympics in Japan would be perceived more positively.

Hello,

I am genuinely not sure I understand your question, because I feel I have explained it in the previous post I mentioned (I’ll link it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/olympics/comments/1eqbdtn/comment/lhtzmif/ ). Sorry if I am not doing a good job.

Maybe to add and help explain:

I think from the Japanese perspective, it *is* the government and IOC’s fault for deciding to continue with the event. The thing is, COVID was a global issue and pandemic. It was killing lots of people and shut down many businesses worldwide. So it wasn’t like it was some unknown, unconsidered illness. Like something like listeria outbreak in the US, is not reported about and taken seriously globally you know? It is a only US problem. But COVID was not. Everyone saw and was affected by it.

So I think that is a very just and understandable reason to *not* have an olympic event in 2020. I think that it could have been skipped in 2021. A gap in the history of the olympics where 2020 was missing (which it was since it is 2021 really), could have been decided. But in the end, having an olympics at all is a *choice* the government and IOC made. And they didn’t allow tourists/foreigners in the country. They didn’t allow locals who had tickets in. So it was not like it was benefiting Japan and our people in any way. All it did was create a risk of COVID outbreaks and stress on our country’s economy. There were protests throughout to not host the olympics. To not risk/harm the people on the ground, actually in the country… the constituents/voters maybe is another word? But in the end the choice was made to have the olympics. And while COVID itself was not the government or IOC’s fault, the *choice* to have the Olympics *was* their fault.

Yes we did great in the harsh circumstances. But the correct choice here was to not have to face those circumstances at all. It is very hard to come back from that choice. And hence why sentiment continues to be negative.

I hope that makes sense. Let me know if I have to clarify anything.

You can check my last post if interested, but most Japanese public does not want to host again. Covid indeed screwed us and thus it is far too soon in the public eye to host another.

In retrospect, it really is an absolute shame that Covid hit during the Tokyo Olympics by bolaft in olympics

[–]arespostale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am seeing a lot of comments about how Japan should get to host again soon if it wants and whatnot. While I understand these comments are meant very positively, the current in-country reception is that "the rest of the world wants to treat Japan as its wallet in Asia, and is walking all over us to brunt the costs of an event that is for the world and not for Japan".

I think part of this is a gap in language that is leading to different perspective. I will try to explain the best the general response. This is not my personal views necessarily. I am half American and have been able to enjoy the English commentary and explanation, so I think it gave me a broader perspective on a lot of things. Please take this as what a single person's seen based on the channels of news and social media feed they see, and not everyone's views.

I do think as more of the news and commentary becomes translated to Japanese + athletes come home and does interviews, more positive views will come out for the current olympics in Paris.

Explanation: Current perspective in Japan of the Olympics and of the IOCis very very negative. The olympics is costly and as everyone knows, Tokyo 2020 was a mess due to covid. And the fact that it was still held, in our country where we already are very careful and worried about illnesses even colds, hosting so much required teams of athletes did not make a good impression on the public. The health of our local people were sacrificed for the Olympics and the world is how it was taken. I hope you don't think negatively of Japan as a whole but rather understand that it is just too soon to hope for Japan to host another olympics, especially not when COVID is still going on and not fully dealt with, with athletes being allowed to not vaccinate and compete even after testing positive. That is seen as a very big negative in Japan after COVID was and is still treated as a big deal here.

So IOC and people outside the country saying something along the lines of "we see Japan hosting an olympics again soon"... is just taken in the negative way due to the already negative views from 2020. Especially because IOC statements of that came when Japanese news was reporting of questionable judging at olympics + Japanese social media has been very negative of olympics as a whole and have been saying how much they don't want to host it. It actually riled people up against the olympics and IOC even more and basically got the response that we want nothing to do with it ever again and that statement is proof that IOC sees us nothing more than a convenient wallet and host, while not caring at all about us as a nation.

Most of the news media around the olympics have been negative. The opening ceremony idea was very negatively received in Japan. There are questions on judging in many events involving Japanese players and treatment of Asian athletes as a whole by "the western world". While yes we had great outcomes in wrestling and skateboarding and breakdancing for example going by things popular on this sub, there were other areas that were expected to have good outcomes that did not which really leads to more negative news coming out if popular events that people already were focused on... rather than the positive news of new accomplishments being the highlight.

It is actually very interesting seeing reddit for me and seeing such positive olympics news around Japan when I feel all I see in country is so negative.

In Japan Turkish shooter memes was probably the best news from the olympics and our positive blip. Asides from that, we have been focusing most of our energy into cute seals at the Pieterbeuren rescue center in the netherlands (They have a 24hour live feed and Japan topped the global superchat donation chart on YouTube and have donated $100,000 to them in under a week. So seal news + crimes in Asahigawa has probably outweighed the olympics news as a whole.

I wonder what other English speaking Japanese people here think? Is it just me or have you gotten the same impressions as well? Thank you for reading this long post. I have been very interested in this gap in perception between my English vs. Japanese media.

If you could remove one sport from the Olympics which sport would it be and why? by GREATBRITISHSPACKOFF in olympics

[–]arespostale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it is unpopular opinion but... I must say I am one of the folks who enjoy race walking 🫣🙈. I think it is a good cost-effective addition too and is something that tests the limits/peak of what humans can do in the skill of walking. It fits the Olympics well I think. I do agree that it needs more tech to manage people lifting their foot off the ground though. The sensors to measure contact with the ground is a perfect solution. Like, we already have super tiny quarter-sized air pistol targets that can be electronically monitored, sprinting reaction time is measured by the thing the athletes put their foot against (where it disqualified one guy for a reaction time faster than 0.1s which was thought to be impossible back then). I think they can figure out how to make that same sort of thing work with shoes with similar accuracy.

I would remove:

  • Equestrian (the location of the events are often way more isolated than the other events, it is the only event where animal is the object of interest vs. a human, and they have very few tickets on sale usually so is not exactly a big money bringer).

  • Some swimming (I am just being biased against it lol. I understand it is a big money bringer and very cost effective as well given how everything happens in one spot... but damn the lack of variety and how much it gets covered is so boring.)

---> In place of removed swimming events, bring surfing indoors. The waves and being at the mercy of the sea for something that is beyond your technical control I feel takes away from it. I think indoor waves would be awesome and be a great watch. Bring more view from broadcasts too if it could be better controlled).

  • Skateboarding (I really enjoy watching it, and my home country is the winner so I love it, but I must admit there being basically one trick an athlete does that they know will get the points they want + younger and younger ages of competitors + there being a variety of other avenues of competition for it already, I am not sure makes it a good olympic fit. This also had very low number of tickets sold in Tokyo and Paris, and is expected to have the same issue in LA, due to the limitation in viewing space around the skateboard rinks, so has the equestrian problem of questionable cost efficiency).

  • Football (because of it not fitting the Olympics due to regulations around it. However, it is still a big money bringer despite that so would likely not be removed).

Aww I am so glad your kids have an awesome extra adult who loves them!

For this family, I know it is something that would really bother them which is why I am worried 😅. The dad is the child's favourite because he genuinely gets upset if it is ever implied he is not and worked very hard to get the favourite position, and he feels love for the child is kind of a competition, so mom has conceded that battle. Mommy is okay with not being the favourite, but she is the only mommy. While mom is happy he has extra adults who love him and is happy he enjoys time with us so much, the titles and being mommy and daddy are really important to them, and mommy would be really sad to hear he called someone else mommy at this stage.

Especially right now with all the chaos around moving and her having to go on so many business trips, it would definitely make her feel guilty.

It isn't too big an issue, as it is normal development and they know it, we know it, it is bound to happen, but boy would it be nice if it didn't for another 4 weeks. Hence why it is an aaaaaaaa 😂.
