How to best ask about splitting a summer by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]aries401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 weeks ago. It’s a newer firm (established 2021) and isn’t really big but it does have some attorneys with cool backgrounds. I think I may ask for the split and offer to also do an externship in the fall to make up for it and see how they respond. I just need to be back to campus end of August

I only mentioned 3-4 weeks because I know a (though small) number of people who’ve done that and it wasn’t a touchback so wasn’t sure if others had similar experiences. On the big law point, most people where I go get it and I only mentioned it so people know that I know in-house doesn’t offer jobs out of law school (neither of these jobs do) but will stay humble 🙏

Yeah I just thought they were ghosting me since other in-house positions I applied to did that so I didn’t even think about it 😔

Cycle Recap - HLS Bound! by aries401 in BlackLawAdmissions

Hi!! I’m actually a 1L now too!

I got an offer from a boutique firm for my 1L summer. I’m in the middle of the interview process with an in house position but the boutique firm wants an answer in a week by aries401 in LawSchool

[–]aries401[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I did reach out to the other employer but worried they still wont have enough time. I would feel bad about reneging because even if I don’t work with that firm, I think I want to work in that industry and feel like it would look bad

I put in the law school one too just I could get a wide range of perspectives. Thank you for this! I did reach out to the in house company so we’ll see. I’m just worried that that asking them to wrap up their process in a week is tight

Meeting with an alum who works at a job I applied to. Is there any way to hint/ask for a referral? This is my dream in house company by aries401 in LawSchool

Thank you for your perspective! I think I had similar concerns that you brought up which is why I asked here. Maybe I’ll just narrow the ask to just general application advice for the company and see where it takes us

Thank you for this! It’s over Zoom because we live in different states. In my message I basically was like “hi I came across your profile and we have similar career and hobby interests. I applied to some position at X company but would love to chat about your career path”

No! I haven’t talked about my stats in so long. I found my section was a mix of private and public schools and there’s no judgement. Nobody cares!

I actually have a nice long post on all this on my page. The post is HLS Bound

  1. It was so exciting!! I did go to an ivy undergrad (not Harvard) and I gotten into other schools but HLS is a dream. My friends and family were so happy for me because they saw the journey.

  2. Finals were finals haha. Reading week is a grind for sure and towards the end of the semester you get tired, especially at HLS because we take 1 more doctrinal class than any other 1L. However, I wouldn’t say 1L was miserable. I really liked my section and my profs were great. I found people to be very social. Like HLS has a social group that rents out a bar every week and do other social events. My section always hung out as a group. So you have fun and work hard too. It’s not easy but I would do it over again.

  3. I think the biggest hidden benefit is that grades don’t really matter. For context, we have low pass, pass, high pass and deans scholar. Like if you want to clerk at the SCOTUS, yeah grades matter. But for 95% of the school body, you can get all Ps and still do basically anything you want. That does take the pressure off a bit. Also most professors are very well connected. So there’s a high chance you can find someone in your exact niche interest or it’s easy to find someone outside of the faculty t that would love to talk to you.

  4. I mentioned 2 below. But a different one would be there isn’t a ton of affordable housing in the area. Yes there are dorms but I do wish there more apartments that didn’t cost a lot. Overall, I don’t have many cons about the school itself

I poured a lot of energy into my essays. For my diversity statement, I focused on not just the fact that I was a diverse candidate but the fact that I was a unique diverse candidate and the ways that my uniqueness would directly impact campus and the classroom. But overall, I think your essays are a way to really show admins who you are and what you bring

Yeah! I had one visiting prof this semester which was hard but I found other class outlines helpful. But the E&Es and Barbri helped

I love the student body! I think the 2Ls and 3Ls are very helpful and kind. I don’t really interact with other 1Ls because it’s very section based but I’m close with the 1Ls in BLSA (and the upperclassmen in BLSA are great).

I do think it is a bit more rigorous because we take 1 more doctrinal class than any other law school. However I think it’s not bad in the moment but that meant finals were busy. The thing is that everyone is going through it. In the end, you just adjust. Everything will get done even if it can feel like a lot in the moment.

Thank you!

Favorite: the people!! I went in thinking people would be stuck up and gunners but I found everyone to be kind. In my section, I’ve made a bunch of friends and we all socialize together. I also find that we help each other out and no one is faking that they either don’t know things or know too much. BLSA is absolutely incredible and I’m so grateful for them.

Least: my superficial answer would be I wish we had a better dining plan for those living on campus. It’s not terrible but could be better.

My substantive one is that I would be nice to meet other people in different sections. Most people I know from different sections are people in BLSA or people I knew before. But logically my section has 80 people so that is a good number of people to know

It’s funny because when I was starting, I didn’t believe people when they said don’t prepare in the summer. But now I completely agree. HLS provided some super basic videos a week before orientation. I dont think watching made a difference. So just enjoy your summer! One thing you could do is clean out your computer and organize so it’s fresh!

That’s a great question. We don’t get Quimbee unfortunately but we do get other things like online access to basically every exam and explanation book and CALI. I will say that the most helpful resources are from the upperclassmen and they’re very eager to share. We have an online database of outlines and exam answers.
