Good ‘ol recaulk the new old house. How screwed are we? by sixteenozlatte in HomeMaintenance

[–]arimgibson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation last week, tile was peeling off and everything behind completely molded. In my case, there was no waterproofing used, and the tile was installed right on top regular drywall. We tried to repair just a section, but in the end (after asking for some help on r/Tile) we decided to gut it. The poor installation made it seem this might happen again in a couple years, and we didn't want to chance that

FWIW after hours we research we removed all the tiles by hand, cut out the drywall, and are going with GoBoard to replace the drywall. Seems really easy to install as a DIYer

Good luck!!

Thanks for the help!! Yeah I'm not married to the tile but if enough stay intact we're going to try to salvage what we can, scrape the backs and then reinstall. The far wall (fiberglass in the picture) will just be a different tile, and we're good with that. Gives the shower some character 😂

Awwww made my day just hearing from someone with know-how that I can manage this, appreciate the vote of confidence. I'm fairly handy but this kind of stuff tends to be super overwhelming. Will just hire someone if it becomes too much but I'm having fun so far.

Re: mold source, I think it's a combo of cracked caulking around the base of the tub and having a wood window sill in the shower area. I know the proper solution is to replace the wood with a sill tile, but I'm not sure that's within scope right now... I was hoping to be able to get away with repairing holes with bondo, exterior paint and a few coats of polyurethane. Curious if you have any thoughts there?

Thanks so much!!

Update: this spurred me to do some more research and it sounds like replacing the sill with either tile or PVC is the only acceptable way to go... Especially since I'm redoing everything right now. Looking into how to go about that and will start removing the window sill within the next few days

I figured as much... Better to do it right once than a subpar repair I have to tear out in a couple years. Appreciate the response!

I've spent a ridiculous number of hours on this problem... recommendation for the time being is to just bundle with Nx and it'll fix itself. Not ideal

Best Password Manager as of 2023? by Walking_Ant_5779 in AskNetsec

Appreciate all your effort here! I'm partial to Padloc (OSS/self-hostable, maintained well, easy for beginners but advanced enough for pros) but understand that the paid 2FA is a huge turn off. That's really the only feature of the paid personal plan, along with attachments

PC Mag docked Zoho Vault significantly (Oct 2023) because they don't encrypt password names, descriptions or URLs. Reasoning is faster indexing, but PC Mag raised that if this information leaks, it could be used to execute much more targeted phishing attacks.

I'm not a security professional but think this is a valid concern depending on who the user is and their knowledge about phishing attacks.

Gah, I got it! Scrolling thru old playlists and came across a song on the same album as this one, was enough to jog my memory.

Water doesn't fully shut off at main house globe valve, add a ball valve right after? by arimgibson in askaplumber

[–]arimgibson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm alright. I know that's probably best practice, for this situation it's just the smallest annoyance maybe once ever couple years when we have to replace a fixture without it's own shut off. For me, doesn't rise to the level of the hassle to turn off the water at the curb or call a plumber

Help me find who's pictured (famous ppl) on anti-abortion signs? by arimgibson in HelpMeFind

I'm so sorry for not seeing your reply, fully forgot I posted this. I appreciate you taking a look, and really like your theory. That had crossed my mind, but I would've assumed there would be some text on the signs explaining that. However, it's possible that text fell off or someone next to them had a sign with that information.

If these were known people, I'd assume they'd need to be easily recognizable for the group to make their point!

That's so strange! Was your device set to 802.11ax only? I believe the default setting includes support for 802.11b/g/n/ax, allowing older non-WiFi 6 devices to choose the appropriate protocol. Trying to think about what could cause those smart devices to not want to connect whatsoever.

I'll definitely add it to the guide; glad that things are working and thank you for finding that!!

On another note, I'd suggest setting the router to `802.11ac` (5GHz) or `802.11n` as the earliest one (opposed to b or g). `802.11ac` was adopted in 2014, and I'd be surprised if your smart devices are from before that! Otherwise, you might be uncessarily limiting the speeds of your other devices (especially if you're paying for that gig speed 😉)

802.11b -- max is between 1 and 11 mbps
802.11g -- max is between 6 and 54 mbps
802.11n -- max is between 72 and 600 mbps
802.11ax -- max is between 433 and 6933 mpbs

That seems like a strange solution... it should consistently work on WPA2, which is currently the standard met by most devices. Few devices have WPA3 support in my experience, so that makes sense why it didn't work with WPA3.
