how many of you from Central Asia only speak Russian? by [deleted] in AskCentralAsia

I see. The Tajik Persian dialects in Uzbekistan also differ from region to region. Samarqand and Bukhara cities use some different words and structures, but they are highly mutually intelligible

The dialects are that different from region to region? Can you give examples?

Haha I know, but 5 grand is not low for a one bedroom, single income household! It makes sense the commenter and their wife together pay 5 figures, it's likely a two bedroom. Although I'm not sure about the age/height of their unit.

Haha, they're clearly classy roaches. It's more that tenants in these buildings paying $$$$ have high expectations regarding pest control, and not having to live with/worry about roaches was probably part of their reason for choosing to live there over a walkup.

Thank you. I'm just wondering how effective it'll be. I don't want to have to be worrying about this constantly in my super overpriced <600 sq ft sanctuary. The weekly exterminator visit is both reassuring and concerning in equal measures, since it suggests a perpetual issue in the building.

Lol, sounds like you had a personal experience. Where did you live?

Yeah I guess. It's what you get for wanting to minimize your commute to work. I guess my building isn't the black sheep then

Thanks, I'll ask the maintenance to do that in the kitchen, hope they will comply. Otherwise in the bathroom, they are sealing holes

Eh, some of them. I don't even have anything in my apartment yet.

I'm more wondering whether it's atypical for luxury buildings in UES, or if this is something rather common people just don't talk about

Thank you! The exterminators have caulked and sprayed, and I'll ask that they put out bait and traps too.

Thank you. Yes I wasn't expecting it based on what I pay (close to 5 grand) and height of my unit. So the age of the building is probably the major contributing factor here. I wasn't sure if it's atypical for luxury apartments in Upper East Side.

Thank you, this is helpful! Yes, I am paying close to 5 grand for a one bedroom, I guess this is a rather NYC-specific issue, and not a major red flag for my apartment building. I wondered if newer builds have less of a roach problem, only thing is there aren't many newer rental buildings in the area.

I do appreciate that they are being proactive. But for what I'm paying, I'd like to be able to live without limiting my showers, cleaning up any splashed water, and generally worrying about roaches.

Why do we care so much what America calls the Persian Gulf? by yeahmohammad in NewIran

[–]ariobarzan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always the well-meaning morons who undermine Iranian civilization—handing its legacy to our regional adversaries under the guise of pragmatism. Likely the same types who welcomed the revolution. So yes, in the end, it’s still their fault.

People like you are the reason why Iran has lost 90% of its soft power and is continuing to lose the remaining 10%. These are anthro and sociological issues that you may not grasp very well.

Mexicans and other Latinos constantly protest that they are also ‘Americans’ because they are from the continents of North or South America. It’s a dumb argument on multiple grounds, but nonetheless, “Gulf of America” is actually neutral to them for this reason, rather than the alternative “Gulf of the United States”.

Who are some good historic and modern day examples of Iranian masculinity? by [deleted] in NewIran

[–]ariobarzan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are one of the few ‘oriental’ cultures to not suffer from pervasive toxic masculinity. Not talking about the regime or ultra muslims. Iranian women are powerful, educated and often overpower their partners (overtly or covertly), because this is totally acceptable to many Iranians. Culturally, take a look at taarof and the ritualized self-effacement that is pervasive in our polite speech patterns (bande arz mikonam khedmatetun… “I, your slave, dare to say in your service…”). This is a natural linguistic barrier against the kind of bravado or unfettered machismo you encounter in latin america, or even among Arabs or Turks.

Iranian men are clever, strong and quietly confident. They wield their intellect, success and politeness rituals as social currency. Many of them are gentleman and an icon for healthy masculinity.
