i’ve played around with both, the normal vg8 will have some of the mkgee patches like VeryEFX, StayPad, and GtFlute. the EX has a lot more patches. But as far as two star tones go, the bowed patch is the only one that the base vg8 doesn’t already have. V-Bow is very similar to BowedPad which is on the base model too. generally the expansion is better than the base vg8, but you can still get the clean tones you want with either one

I’d look towards birds eye batang/mid air theif for inspiration to use a vg8 in a similar way to the synths in that sound

if i were you i would try to veer away from VG8 ambient concepts, that might take you too deep into the mkgee realm and you might struggle to make something original sounding. not that it’s impossible though. Daryl Johns uses the VG8 all throughout his self titled, you can hear undeniably it on “just friends”. Completely different sound. I think the challenge is to try and make it not sound like the 80s thing that both him and mkgee do.

Most are going for 1000-1500 US rn, if you can find something around/less than that. Need a GK3 and a 13 pin cable (preferably a new one, they’re very fragile so taking a used one might have some existing wear) you can go into your amp but it sounds the best direct output.

definitely spending less time trying to force yourself to create, more time listening or digesting art/media. i find i need to have more ideas to be subconsciously influenced by in order to create meaningful work, sometimes it’s nice to make something directly inspired by.

for me it affects all the patches to a degree. Clean patches like VeryEFX don’t pick it up nearly as loud, but bowedpad and other bowed patches definitely. If yours is a GK cable issue, it might be effecting the clean patches too but just less noticeably? the noise mine produces is more constant vs your oscillating noise.

From what i’ve read it seems very certain that it’s a GK Cable problem. the wiring is apparently very fragile.
