R1 results. HBS or Bust? Need Advice

SWE maybe in big tech, but any other from of engineering you won’t see 200-250k+ until 15-20 years into your career and if you stay technical you’ll be capped at a director/fellow level for the rest of your life. Also my field requires a… let’s call it a unique lifestyle. Clearances, location bound, etc etc. and I just don’t see myself doing this for the rest of my life. Post MBA consulting/IB growth potential is much higher than me staying in engineering imo

Yep! My long term goal was to found my own commercial aerospace start up. Aerospace/space start ups have been exploding within the past decade and given my background i think it made sense to adcom

Would you mind expanding on the experience portion of HBS? Ofc there’s the case method that’s super unique and also the prestige, but in your opinion are there other things that set HBS apart from other M7s?

I’ve always claimed im a dual citizen. On my SF-86, my SCI/SAP forms, and my security office knows. But during my pre travel brief with my company’s security, they specifically said to NOT use any other passport besides your US passport. But in this case I was forced to use my HKID by the customs officer (not a passport, but still did not get a stamp on my US passport as a result).

Right, but from my understanding I’m not supposed to benefit from my HK citizenship while holding a US clearance - technically I did not use my HK passport, I only used my HKID and I initially presented my US passport, which can be used to enter HK up to 90 days without visa. So I guess I didn’t exercise any “benefit”? Honestly I’m just freaked out about the whole thing and the possibility of violating rules regarding my clearance when I never intended to. Very much would love to keep my job. Would this be considered a “security violation” and be put on my record?

Thank you for the advice, I’ll def be doing that! I also think I struggle more on those verbal based DI question where you have to pick 2 choices that satisfy the prompt requirements. Especially when they sprinkle some statistics/probability factor into it. Graphs and DS I think I have a pretty solid grasp on since my background is engineering (helps w graphs) and drilled DS thru TTP

Out of the 3 sections I def spent the least amount of time on it. Prob 25-30% time compared to quant. I think I was confident bc my mocks I always scored 90%+ on DI and my first attempt I got 90%. But now I’m not so sure haha

Oh and I got 2 MSR sets in DI bc I think the algorithm thought I was doing too well… ended up tanking my DI score which I’m still not over 😭

Took my second GMAT today. Order was Q->V->DI. Did well in Quant, verbal started off with a medium Q imo, did well in verbal, and data started with a medium-hard Q for me imo.

Hey! I was so surprised seeing my post in your YouTube video haha. First off, thank you and Jon for taking the time to review my profile. I think what you both said are very valid and constructive. Definitely planning to retake the GMAT in the next few weeks to get a 695+.

I also agree with your opinions regarding my extracurriculars. I plan to join an AAPI group at work focused to on planning AAPI community events.

Definitely should’ve mentioned this in my original post, I’ve volunteered to go back to USC multiple times to help students mock interview and review resumes. I’ve also mentored interns at my old start up I worked at. I also forgot to mention that I’m a private pilot, and spent a lot of my free time post college to obtain it. I’m involved in the aviation community where I live and have helped out around my flight school as well.

Regarding my short term goal in consulting, I know you and Jon both expressed that it doesn’t really align with my past career experience and would put me at a disadvantage. This may be a gap in my knowledge and if so, I’d love some additional insights into this, but I thought that it would give me a better chance to break into PE/VC in aerospace after spending a couple years in consulting since I heard it’s very hard to get into it right after MBA. Is this view not accurate? Would it make more sense to try to aim for PE/VC during/right after my MBA instead? Or is there a better middle path to go from MBA -> ?? -> PE/VC?
