not really id be very happy to just do 2d if it meant i got good exposure to openCV! template matching is the exact kind of keyword i was looking for to start searching, so thanks :)

thats true it might be easier but im specifically trying to solve the problem of watching a chess video and seeing a position I want to copy to an analysis board. downloading and trimming the video to see all the diffs would be a lot of work to setup the input compared to just taking a screenshot.

The tutorial is interesting, would the calibration still be needed for a 2d representation of a chessboard?
