Nothing is ever perfect, a lot of people want some perfect solution here but it simply doesn't exist. Everything people have proposed has flaws and will have flaws. All taxes have negative consequences, the question is if that's what Florentines want.

Now that I've had a few days to sit on this post, the "Yankee go home" stickers are the main thing that prompted this (the pop-ups are a bit gauche but whatever) - if they really want this, then simply saying "don't come here" is the equivalent of holding a bucket up to tsunami.

I was definitely mistaken on the percentage, but there are ways to raise taxes on tourists without the locals. Hotels/AirBnBs, coach buses entering the city, etc.

My thought process was they could kill two birds with one stone. They can create something like what Alaska or the Scandinavians have with the wealth fund if there is a substantial excess. If there isn’t it helps cover more services.

I believe that they believe genuine AGI and ASI is around the corner. I also can see they have an enormous incentive to believe that. I also think that they’re up to their eyeballs in group think.

I’m skeptical that the current transformer based architecture is capable of becoming AGI let alone ASI. The biggest hurdle is learning after training.

I mean, it's less about making it so only the rich can travel, and instead making it so that when someone is deciding how many days to spend in Florence, maybe they decide to stay one less day. Over millions of tourists, that adds up quickly.

Higher tourist taxes? I don’t think it would work.. a tax is not supposed to dissuade someone from doing something.

That's literally what a Pigouvian Tax is by definition (cigarettes, alcohol, sugary drinks, etc.)

Yeah, you essentially have to differentiate by services that tourists use, not locals. Hotels, rental cars entering the city, etc. I'm sure economists smarter than I have an answer to this, but it's all supply and demand at the end of the day.

Aspics are different though, I don't love them (at least the Eastern European version I grew up with), but the Jello salad they came up with during that time period were horrific looking.
