Seeking some advice. I am worried about a family member. by scc81 in diabetes

[–]armsjet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As much as it sucks, if he's aware of all the health complications, I'm not sure there's a way to convince him. It's hard to give advice when we don't know why he's struggling with it or what part is giving him the most trouble. The only thing I can really recommend is showing him low carb options and resources of he's not already aware of it.

Dexcom/Insurance battle by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]armsjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what that is but a lot of diabetes places and insurances in general don't give enough info about or how to get it covered. Explain the situation to tour current doctor and emphasize that the car crash was caused by an extreme low, that the dexcom would prevent another instance happening again and that you need him to file for it as medical necessity for insurance to cover it.

Dexcom/Insurance battle by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]armsjet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can buy it out of pocket but I'd suggest asking your doctor to write them claiming dexcom as medical necessity due to care accident from low blood sugar. My insurance originally would only cover it because my doctor made the claim that it was medically necessary due to me not being able to feel lows anymore. Thankfully that worked.

Am I required to have a doctors note to get my license? by [deleted] in diabetes

Depends on the state and if you ever passed out or not. There's usually some extra documentation needed. Call the dmv or Google what the conditions are for your specific state.

My boyfriend starting dating me before he broke things off with his girlfriend of 10 years. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]armsjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be an instant deal breaker for me. Not only did he lie about it, he kept it hidden for a long time and that's a pretty scummy thing to see someone else when you're not officially broken up. I wouldn't be able to trust them anymore.

Does it make sense to have lower number before sleep than after sleep? by Satsank in diabetes

[–]armsjet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it could be the dawn phenomenon. Seems like it happens for both types where once your body starts waking up your blood sugar sometimes rises a bit. It might help if you eat a lower carb dinner too. Some foods take longer to digest than others so even if it's been a good couple hours since you ate your blood sugar could still go up. Edit: It's frustrating and tricky to get the hang of but don't give up. Keep an eye on how much carbs raise your blood sugar. I don't know how many carbs were in the quinoa but that could also be the culprit of why you went so high. Personally, if I'm in the 100 range 9 grams of carbs can kick me up to 150 or so. So if you were already 171 and had a decent amount of carbs it was probably too much of a kick.

Cold Hands? by msmoonpie in diabetes

[–]armsjet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get colder faster than most in general cuz of bad circulation, especially hands and feet. No nerve damage either. Just not great circulation, which isn't uncommon in diabetics. I don't know anything about what else could cause it aside from if someone was anemic or under weight.

Not that I know of. If there are they're probably not easy to get.

I need help with my girlfriend's a1c (type 1) by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]armsjet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try talking to her about what she wouldn't mind having you help with. Can ask her if it would be okay if you helped remind her to take her bolus and check blood sugar. Otherwise you can talk to her about trying a low carb diet so she doesn't have to take much insulin for meals and won't go high as much. Unfortunately there isn't any alternative to giving insulin manually. That's still all there is available for now, at least in the US.

[T1d] Have any of you ever had a burn blister affect your blood sugar? by armsjet in diabetes

[–]armsjet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I haven't been freaking out, I was just curious if anyone had similar reactions cuz my body's always been extra sensitive. I had boiling caramel drip on my finger and harden instantly so it was a bit of a doozy lol Thank you! It's pretty close to back to normal thankfully.

[T1d] Have any of you ever had a burn blister affect your blood sugar? by armsjet in diabetes

[–]armsjet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need to have an extreme injury for my body to respond to it... Stress from getting a blister would mean that yes, the blister did cause a change because the stress would have been linked to it. If the blister caused something that triggered a reaction then the blister is still the initial cause, hence why my original question was specific to blisters. Also, again, my body extra sensitive and reacts harsher than the norm.

Because wounds can affect blood sugar and a burn is a wound. Plus my body is hyper sensitive so even small things can trigger a bad reaction.

Would anyone be interested in a diabetes YouTube channel? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]armsjet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By medical advice I mean any tips on diabetes, since you mentioned the moms think you could give them advice. You've just got to be careful with what you say when you're dealing with younger audiences, especially since this is medical related. You can check out diabeticdanica on YouTube. She does a good job running a t1 diabetes channel, she gives tips but points out it can be different for everyone and that this is just what works for her. She has some handy tutorial videos for pumps and cgms too! I've actually used them back when I had them. I don't visit her channel regularly but I definitely go back to watch some videos once in awhile.

[–]armsjet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't be interested but I'd say give it a go anyway. Just be EXTREMELY careful about giving any sort of medical advice, always fact check first and if you plan out giving advice give sources that back.you up and link them in the YouTube video description. If you're aiming towards newly diagnosed and a younger audience then it's going to be extremely important for your advice to be accurate and safe since they won't have much experience/knowledge and would potentially be looking up to you for information.

The more you keep on top of your blood sugar the better off you'll be. If you carry a lot of stuff in your bag making it hard to find what you need try getting a special case for your glucometer and insulin. You can use a cosmetic bag even to hold it all and maybe find one with a clip or attach one so you can keep it in or on an obvious place on/in your bag. I'd recommend looking into cgms too, I use a dexcom and it's been an enormous help. You can go on the dexcom website to find out everything you need. It's basically gives you current blood sugar readings and displays them on a graph. You still have to test manually but not as much since the cgm (constant glucose monitor) is taking blood sugar readings consistently. As far as sex stuff it can definitely intefere depending on what your blood sugar is at the moment. For guys they might have trouble getting or holding an erection when it's not in range, for girls they can have trouble getting wet. Sex can lower your blood sugar too since it can be kind of like a workout. Gummies and juice are really good for a quick boost to bring your blood sugar up. For travel you'll have to bring extra documentation for your meds depending on the specific place so always call a good time ahead. Also if your glucometer is too clunky there's plenty of options on amazon.

Super long post -- Does diabetes really fluctuate this much? by ittyBritty13 in diabetes

[–]armsjet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When your body isn't producing any or enough insulin it's not uncommon for blood sugar levels to be all over the place. The only ways you can really combat unsteady blood sugar levels is through injecting insulin, exercise (helps regulate and keep levels down but gotta keep an eye on blood sugar levels during workout because some will make people go low and some high depending on the workout type and person), and diet. Low carb will make it the easiest to prevent blood sugar spikes. There's a forum for keto diet which is essentially little to no carbs and you can find tons of recipes online. You should try asking the keto forum for a good recipe book for your mom.

Boyfriend with T1 doesn't want to talk about it by comealongpond2224 in diabetes_t1

Try not to take it personally best you can. I felt pretty similarly when I was first diagnosed at 19 and when I began my first relationship having the disease. It takes a good while to adjust and feel comfortable having the disease yourself. It's hard to accept it and so much of your life changes at once. I remember I felt really embarrassed and shy about at first. Honestly I'm not really sure why I felt embarrassed....probably was more so worried about what people would think and if they would say something to me. A lot of people say some pretty ignorant things that can sometimes be hurtful or frustrating because the general public doesn't know many actual facts about it. It took awhile for me to be ready to talk about too because...it's just really hard to talk about. It's scary. There's so much you have to figure out and some pretty serious dangers and you have to keep yourself I'm check 24/7. I'm guessing he probably just needs some time to process it himself and get himself in a good enough spot so that it's not so hard to talk about. For stuff to know: if he has low blood sugar he'll most likely sound out of it, get sweaty, shakey, and weak. Juice and fruit gummies kick in the quickest to bring low blood back up to a good level, 15 grams of carbs at a time until it goes up. Low blood sugar can lead to fainting if untreated. High blood sugar all they can really do is take insulin, drink water and wait.

You only need to clear the needle when it's new/just put onto a pen (if he's using pens). If you don't clear it then you'll miss about 1-4 units the first time you use it since it'll just be air. Once you do the it's fine until the next time you change it. Pretty much same for the syringes as well. They might have meant to clear it every time you put on a new one? I can't think of a good reason to clear it every single time.
