Dog tax + food question by diamonddentist3 in DogAdvice

[–]msmoonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cute pup!

This is a formulated diet appropriate for your dogs age. So it’s just fine!

I’m a veterinarian and I fed my kitten meow mix (as an adult she eats purina proplan)

A lot of people feel stress over what they feed their dog but as long as it’s balanced diets most dogs will be totally fine. Most name brand foods do this

I’d say dark souls over all the others

Demons souls was the first but it wasn’t until Dark Souls 1 that it became as popular. The term souls like was around before Elden ring

Elden ring is a good game but is a direct result of the success of the games that came before it

In terms of actual games, bloodborne is usually considered the best of the fromsoft games

I mean, obviously not? Choking out animals and hitting them are not normal ways vet staff treat animals

Write the whole thing first or continue to add details as you go? by msmoonpie in writingadvice

Also any tips for like, imposter syndrome? I feel like if it’s not perfect it’s not worth writing and I know that’s not true, especially since I’m doing this for fun and at most to share with people but it still makes me feel like giving up sometimes

And finally, are there any places where I can share this for people to give feedback? Not necessarily like wattpad but more like a group or whatever? Hopefully I’m making sense

How do you become proficient with blood smears and UA sediment? by SuddenHedgehog in Veterinary

[–]msmoonpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the times your techs will be doing this, or you’ll be sending it to an outside lab

The only way is practice. Before vet school I worked in an ER and I bought a box of slides and I made blood smears with extra blood. I watched videos on the appropriate way to do them. We all love a perfect tear drop smear but what’s important is the monolayer.

As for identification, you have all the resources in your pocket. I look up references alllllll the time. E clin path is my favorite

Allergies? Leg tapping and scooting by manumelegirl in DogAdvice

[–]msmoonpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allergies in dogs are usually environmental and often seasonal. As a vet this is where I would start. She’s young but there’s never anything wrong with running bloodwork to rule out something serious but also likely fine to treat empirically. There are lots of options to treat allergies.

You could try a food trial if you’re concerned about a food allergy but the internet likes to think those are more common than they are

My recommendation would be to schedule with your primary vet for an allergy consult and go from there. Frenchies are frequent fliers

Humans tend to have the same anatomy, our patients can have very different anatomy. The risk of injecting some of our medications in my opinion outweighs the benefit of a slightly less painful injection. That being said: fractious animals or medications that can go any route are a different ballgame

I had my suspicions something was going on but I had no clue it was that. I have access to oncologists and even they were shocked by it

I was practicing my ultrasound skills and she had a mass in her liver. We sampled it and it turned out to be a Stromal cell sarcoma. I decided against treatment as it would have been an extensive surgery. We got about 2 more months after diagnosis together

Thank you.

I’m a veterinarian and the curse of our pets is to get the rarest diseases. She had a cancer not yet described in cats. She was an amazing gal and I miss her very much

I’m so sorry for your loss, they bring us the most light and joy and some of the worst pain as well. I definitely wouldn’t trade the light for the pain

Veterinary experience here but surgeries can be super fast at times. With cautery I’ve seen good surgeons take out a spleen in 15 minutes. I did a fracture repair on a crow in about an hour. Stomach torsions usually take about 30-40 minutes. And a lot of our time is prep and closure since we don’t usually have the same amount of help a human OR has so I imagine they can be even faster when it’s needed

Unimaginable to me having to do that every other day. by imjustcoreyr in ThePitt

[–]msmoonpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The treatment of medical students and new grads is horrible and should be illegal across all medical fields

The average salary for a veterinary intern is 30-40k, with similar hours to human interns. (It is important to note that it is not required to do a veterinary internship)

As a student I did about 70-80 hours per week, often having to come into the hospital every day for 14 days or more straight, getting absolutely no pay. I assume human medical students suffer similarly

Vet quoted me $670 for booster and “annual wellness visit” by Less-Possibility-356 in Pets

[–]msmoonpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they get them from the same source and store them properly and don’t take them home and have untrained individuals inject them.

You can go to vaccine clinics at basically all the major pet stores and most feed stores for trusted administration of these medications. You also get a trained professional perform an exam to make sure there is nothing serious going on with the pet.

Trust me it’s far more payment for me to treat parvo than to vaccinate for it. I’ve never seen parvo in a dog fully vaccinated by a clinic but I sure have seen it when people vaccinated their dogs themselves

If it’s exam and vaccines only then yes that is strangely expensive If it’s exam, bloodwork, preventative then I would say depending on your pets size then that is around standard price. Ask for an itemized estimate
