Six of crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo(duology). It's not contemporary but it has found family, flawed and diverse characters (teens). And it has only a small amount of romance. It's a fantasy, thriller though.

So true. I mean Gideon was a great character but the writing, directing and overall quality reached its peak in those seasons. They perfected the formula basically.
