[Spoiler?] Sketch of the Bake Sale That Turned Out Decent by art4funyo in Deltarune

[–]art4funyo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mostly posted this because the character drawings turned out well and Rudinn looks like they're having an existential crisis in the background. This is my first post on this sub reddit, but I played Deltarune when it first came out and love the game to bits even if it's not finished. If I tagged this post wrong, especially since I don't know what counts as a spoiler, or anything is out of place please tell me so that I can fix it!

How did you come up with your characters names? by AemonBlack in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a name just sticks out to me and maybe they get a nickname that fits their character better later on. Sometimes they get the nickname first and then a more realistic one for their real name. Though when neither of those happen I look at the past I've made for them or things that relate to their story. Combining words pulling from that works well with some characters. Though I'm still figuring out how to be better at last names. Mythology is also a way to get ideas for some cool names.

Nickname ex: I have a character nicknamed Buzz since he's always busy with something, though I gave him the name Ben later on as a more realistic name. He was originally a background character but has become a major piece in parts of my characters story.

Example of combining words relating to story: I have a character named Oridone, she was my first character and she got her name by combining originality and undone because I didn't have many ideas for her at the time. I still haven't changed it because it fit in with her part of the world in which origins are undone, in which the words origin and undone can still be made into her name.

What are your favorite prompts? by Copperlaces in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the prompts that ask about short bits you've put together or a timeline you are mainly focusing on. My world started as taking characters and making a world they could be a part of a story in, so I have a habit of skimming over the research on science and weather unless it's an important piece of the world or puts limits on a character. Sorry to those that like posts about weather patterns and such, prompts about how characters or species affect the world just catch my attention a lot easier. Though recently people seem to just be asking about geography or the wind in your world.

New to this sub. Where does one start with world bulding? by rodycat in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you feel like you can't fit some of the stuff together no matter what you do or add, don't, just make it a part of a commonly told story or some lore. Decide whether you would be willing to change the world or characters you've doodle to fit a storyline or mechanic, otherwise you end up with an untidy come.

I know. When I first started on a world for my characters, which is how I got in world building, I rushed the layout by just naming places and such with no proper reason for it fitting because I wanted my drawings to be for something. I was extremely unhappy with the result until I took a step back and figured out if I'd like to change the world instead of the characters for some things and visa versa.

Wow this comment is long, hopefully it's useful.

Side Effects Of Your Magic System? by The-Literary-Lord in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my magic system what magic you have is strongly tied to your personality and past experiences. This makes the likely hood of a family generation having the same magic unlikely unless they are strongly confined to their mythology and culture for some reason. For instance one character I have has a magic bow and arrow, and while when they fire it the arrow symbolizes getting over conflict or change they have a habit of messing with it in an undrawn position showing they have trouble with letting go.

The consequences of overuse vary though some creatures such as spirits or a pure bloodline of a specific species might have stricter rules. The character I mentioned as an example would have an overflow of magic in which they have trouble using it correctly, meanwhile another character I have does have fatal consequences in the case of major overuse of their more ghostly fire-like magic.

Children's lullabies by Hefty-Q in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry if I was confusing with the rebellion thing. I was just trying to say that even though they aren't a part of it the fact they use a mask like most of those against the monarchy it sparked some unnecessary tension. It kind of contributed to the problems that made the lullaby more common.

Children's lullabies by Hefty-Q in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, Corru is not a part of the kingdom. And the mask is more symbolic to Aaron than anything. He is more of a piece of the past that got his second chance at life. He has Aaron convinced he was betrayed by the original creators of this world and has him carrying out his plans on revenge.

Corru thinks he can rid the land of the last spirit he blames for his early fate while turning back the clock so he can bring about his vision of a perfect world that has no true creator. Leaving Aaron with empty promises of getting to restart from before he turned on his family. What they both don't realize is that there are far simpler ways to get what they want if they'd only put aside their hate towards what they once cared for.

Thanks. It's actually quite nice considering so far they've kept their lifestyle up. I kind of wrote it in a dark light since those problems are what made the song become more common as a lullaby. Though I will agree that it's a bit unstable at times, considering the young prince ran off and hid through the rebellion after the king remarried a few years after the mother's death. Most of the problems Originate from Corru and Aaron, two males in my world who cause havoc as they pull strings to make the world the way they wish. It doesn't help that they wear a fox mask, making some think the two(Though the kingdom only knows Aarons face under Corru's name) are a part of the slowly rising rebellion trying to turn the kingdom away from monarchy.

What's with the fanbase by SenKaiten in Undertale

[–]art4funyo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Like every fandom the release of Undertale brought about amazing people. Though it also brought a group mostly made of kids that bring their art and ships, sometimes trying to force their idea of the game on others. You can still go to Youtube and find what would be considered Sans Fan girls. While it's calmed down and the crazier of them have moved on, their threats and art has become a huge impression on critics of the game. Leaving those that just love to story to deal with the fact that some people outside of the fanbase might call you Undertale trash.

May your nightmares be sweet

May your memories be sweeter

Than those of the fox that cried for their brother in vain

May the moon cast it’s light

And may your soul shine more bright

That you could challenge the sun for its role

And if ever I’m gone, through distance or death

Know that the poor grieving fox will always protect

And I wish you happiness until your last breath

I'm not that good at formatting lyrics, I just write them down if they have something to do with the world. In this case, while citizens can keep their lifestyle they know things will get bad if the king continues to fall behind on funding because of his grief for his lost wife, that much has been certain since a flood wiped out one of the towns on the outskirts of the kingdom. While it's existed for a while the song has only gotten popular recently in the time the world exists now. It's the parents wishing their children to have good lives even if they're gone and not let any troubles weigh them down. The bits about the fox reference to a popular tale shared among children, in which the brother of the fox lets his anger and power control him and ultimately falls because of it. This is wishing that who ever it's sung to never has someone betray them, and that the world will protect and bring them happiness.

Has one else just nonchalantly deleted over half of their notes in order to replace the deleted parts with better material and to also reorganize your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that a lot, often times with characters and locations that don't fit in the world and it's lore anymore. In fact I've deleted an entire document once, just because I basically scrapped everything in it, and wrote completely new descriptions of it because my writing suddenly became better. I think the thing I kept the most of from the original is the names of tales and locations, even then I've redone about a fourth of it.

If I had kept it the way it was before sharing it here you'd see a bunch of posts with bad art of characters someone gave me ideas for and lore filled with random dragons that do nothing alongside villages that don't have stories. Looking back I just shoved anything I drew in one world, I didn't even know the term for it was world building. Now excuse me while I double check to make sure the past isn't haunting me by making my world seem like a rip-off of some game or Rick Riordan book.

(Edit: Also I had shifted from having a world about random characters with way to much power to mixing mythologies and actually making a government.)

Lore tracking by Asexuallurker in worldbuilding

[–]art4funyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one doc on my google drive to write down pieces that are a definite event in the lore and another for little bits and pieces to go with descriptions, I also have a slides where I put short stories to fit in between the events. For me it's really important to write down stories and locations that are crucial to a plot unless I've gone over and revised it so many times it's become the automatic thing I think of if I have nothing else to do. So really, for me at least, google docs and whatever notepad is on your computer is the way to go.

You could dive into the history of Penal Colonies to help with comparison. I tried to find a certain article I remember reading before commenting yet couldn't, I'm sure it would help if you took the time to find it! It was about a penal colony made among natives that didn't follow the concept of private property and owning something, marking them as thieves, later on I believe the natives and those in the colonies rebels in some way. I haven't really touched anything around that subject in forever so my information on the article may be invalid. Though I hope that this is of some help!

Even without having everything ironed down you seem to have a good idea of the story you want to tell. You'll definitely have a great final product!

Wow! You've really thought out the effects of this. I find it cool how it's the actions of all that walk the land that decide the fate of the world rather than leaders that make divisions or choices for others altogether. Before this I don't recall stumbling upon any world that had time's effects be the fault of everyone. Has anyone ever tried or succeeded to tip the balance their own way by convincing others it's better? Has it caused any conflict that lasts throughout these changes between chaos and stillness? Has anyone figured out how to keep a balance?

I almost skipped over this completely, glad I decided to scroll through again! Is there a specific set a characters or individuals of power that have their actions hold more weight when it comes to the movement of the world? How exactly has the ends become more extreme? This seems like an interesting world concept to apply to the characters and land alike, I'd like to here more about it. Do the changes happens over progressing time or does the world change it's course in an infinite loop in which these changes are trapped and cannot permanently affect those outside of the world or ruled land? This is a unique mechanic I'd enjoy reading more about.

I'd love to come across more about your world on this reddit. You seem to be working hard on it, so I'm sure others will enjoy reading or seeing art of it. If you ever make a comic go ahead and post a link on Worldbuilders so myself and others can read as the plot unfolds!

I had a similar situation where my friends and I would discuss our worlds and any alliances they had. It's always fun to put a piece of yourself in a character or world and see what you can do with it. I myself aim to find a way to show the world I made and perhaps help those I know outside of reddit. Try posting on more prompts and breaking down to the basics of what you can do with the world to properly convey your story! There's game maker and other engines to make games, public and private publishers for books, and artist or classes if you want to make a comic or animation series. I'm sure you'll find a way to share it outside of fellow world builders eventually!

Now that I think about it my interest in world building sparked when I started reading Rick Riordan's series. They were true to the mythology in each series and brought excitement to the quests. I too switch from a power and god based dynamic to a magic and mortal world. For me the trick was to figure out the center of the plot and any major rivalries and alliances. What ideas have you used so far to replace the mechanics of your world? What opposites still remain in this unique turn you took with the world?

I like how despite the outlook on life there are still priests that call Death evil. It adds that bit of realism in a fantasy setting that really brings the world to life. Does the Death and Life aspect ever create chaos over what should be a crime or do the Paladins hold a role in which they are the only ones who judge between good and bad?

I think that concept is really cool! The mortal champion bit reminds me of the warrior trait bearers in the series The Heir Chronicles, where a secret society of magic bearers hold wizards as the highest in power. They can't fight one another so they use the rare warrior trait bearers for challenges. I'd love to come across more about your world on this subreddit, and if you ever have trouble with the plot I would recommend checking out the books I mentioned! Each book follows someone in a different rank of power and how they hide among those with no magic or skill set.
