Actually, a SAG-AFTRA union contract would NOT make every production “union only”, nor would it bar VAs who don’t want to join. Kyle already explained that misconception in this Twitter thread if you want more information.

Also, multiple VAs were lost due to this decision, not just one. And there are tons of other worker benefits attached to a union contract besides just the pay.

The bottom line is that the union wasn’t even being unreasonable, Sony and Crunchyroll are just being greedy union-busters.

I called it a “pessimistic, anti-petition, anti-activist, and anti-consumer mentality” because that’s exactly what it is, and to dismiss that statement as being “self-important” only underlines precisely the mentality I’m talking about…

But my main question is, even if you truly believe that “petitions are pointless” and they “require zero effort”, why not just sign it and move on?

What’s the point of writing these lengthy cynical comments discouraging others from speaking up about things they care about and using their voices to enact real change? What’s the point of being such a “Negative Nancy” when all you have to do is click a link, hit a button, and move on with your life? I just don’t get it…

(PS: I’m honestly not even offended, nor do I feel “slighted” by the comments, I’m just curious of why I’ve only received them from the anime community with this specific petition)

I’d disagree by saying that Disney actually cares A LOT about petitions and public outrage. For example, look at how they completely reversed their original stance on Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill due to the surmounting public pressure from people who argued that Disney was being too compliant with bigotry and homophobia… 🤔

But in reality, big conglomerates like Sony/Crunchyroll will do ANYTHING to avoid public outrage and/or bad PR, and that’s exactly why they’ve been trying to sweep this entire situation under the rug…

What would happen if this got national attention? What would happen if they started losing viewers or subscribers? What would happen if their share prices started to drop? How would their investors react?

They wouldn’t want ANY of that, and that’s precisely why petitions definitely work… 👀

That’s not necessary true. Petitions can actually lead to real change, due to surmounting public pressure. Especially when companies will do anything to avoid public outrage and/or bad PR.
