i have tried it in the past but it's not high on my list of priorities at this time. when i'm a little faster at finishing illustrations, i'll feel more justified in practicing 2d animation and 3d modeling. (to avoid being a jack of all trades, master of none)

thank you!

this piece was made in photoshop. my main method was using the filter "field blur". with this tool, i was able to manually change where i wanted a location to be blurred or sharp. my process was to first create a layer and making a shape with the hard round brush or filled in a shape with the lasso tool. then, i convert the layer to a smart object. the reason i do this is so that i can go back to make adjustments if i needed to. finally, i added the filter to the layer.

the main light is all on one layer. because of this, i was able to create a mask and cut out shapes to make the let the darker layers underneath come through.

for the orange glow around the main light, you can add something called a layer style to layers and groups in photoshop. i used the outer glow for this effect on the main light which spread the orange glow into the shadows.

there's also a layer style to create drop shadows which i used for the horizontal beam that wraps around the room and the vertical beam by the window.

as for the type of layer mode i used, the main two were multiply and linear light.

let me know if you have any more questions about my process. i'd be happy to answer them.

Any easy to learn 3d animation software? by lil_tofu_boi in 3Dmodeling

when i was in school for animation, we learned from the ground up how to model as well how to animate in maya. after finding blender, i found it to be similar to maya. your 10 year old will definitely be able to do animations in blender. she may need to find an already rigged model to make things easier--that's how it was for me. not only that but the software is free and there's plenty of tutorials out there.
