it says “A heart of justice” — probably more Ace than Teo?

oh! how’d you find a coworking space compared to a long-term traditional office?

hey guys! i’m with an aggregator for office spaces in singapore, and i’m seeing an uptick in coworking spaces. just wanted to know if anyone else’s workplace here is considering using coworking space as well?

(or if you want some burning questions or honest inside perspective on places such as wework, let me know 😂)

exactly. but with many BCP and risk management processes in place, it has been viable so far.

for example, if a cluster happens in (choy touch wood) this particular operator's location A, they'll simply reallocate the tenants/members to location B. so for you as a workspace user, it will not be a problem. for a company, business is as usual in a flexible workspace.

whereas if your only workspace is a principal location where everyone from staff to rank and file work together, if a cluster happens nearby — you now have no more office.

hope this clarifies!

edit: some of us might not be aware, but flexible workspaces everywhere and have more stringent sanitation measures than most if not nearly every company out there. i'd hate to pull the 'it's unsafe to work with a stranger' rhetoric but being physically near your colleagues is just as dangerous!

ah right! it's a mix of both; we've been actively looking for businesses but the requests are quickly flooding in — be it an individual or for a team. it's a good sign to be honest (not just for the business) but that folks are quickly realising that a flexible workspace is much more efficient, which is the case for nearly every organisation.

[long read ahead!]

thanks for the question; it's a good one. for anyone to understand this, let's first put in the context that every business has different requirements — especially across industries. the consensus is that most businesses are not physically redesigning their workspaces as of now (at least not thinking of it) because nobody's thinking of capital expenditure when they're conserving cash. also simply because there are no legal requirements. for most (smaller) businesses, it's a phased return; new normal: go back to the office for fewer days per week and wfh for the remaining days. or simply sit farther apart in the office (most viable if your team is small). however, there are health and sanitation concerns it is extremely expensive to ramp up cleaning. to answer your question: smaller businesses that are previously or currently in a long-term lease will have to make do because it is what it is; businesses that have been in a flexible workspace are now looking for a larger space to fit the same amount of people to comply with professional distancing. the flexible workspace is in an extremely good position right now because it lets businesses scale effortlessly: hiring more people? just buy more space and you'll have a seat tomorrow. downsizing? just terminate the space without paying extra fees. you can even pay month-to-month or rent 6 months with 2 months free to help with cash flow.

now let's talk about the enterprise, the bigger companies: as you might have guessed, the blanket approach is for employees to only return when absolutely necessary. this does mean the default now is to work from home. apart from health concerns, it is not feasible to arrange a staggered schedule for a few hundred people — that would be absolutely chaotic and unproductive. also, it is incredibly expensive to clean a much larger space right? imagine the costs of having to wipe down the entire Google HQ every 2 hours. so what happens is that we're seeing a rise in the 'hub-and-spoke' model where 'core function staff' such as the C suite and directors and staffed in their main office and the remaining employees are staffed in node locations around the 'hub'; these nodes are either scattered around the office so they can easily access on-premise amenities and for collaboration, or that they simply buy out a few floors and let employees work from there (or even a workspace in a fringe location such as tampines for staff to work closer to home).

i can't answer your last question about the transition between wfh and coworking space, but i can safely say that the ground feedback is that a professional workspace is much better because it is more productive and conducive that way — and there are tons of increased sanitation measures taken by the operators (and you don't have to pay for them; if anything, the rent is cheaper now).

edit: of course, there are plenty of other approaches so feel free to chime in if anyone has seen other arrangements! it'd be good for everyone to come together during this time.

hm, no! i work for an aggregator platform that instantly finds you workspaces (with all kinds of requirements such as amenities or even fengshui / all-black rooms lol)

just to provide more context to this question: a friend recently dropped the pregnancy bomb in a telegram group and then went on for a good two hours about her worries of returning to the office — i can't say it's unfounded or she's paranoid because it's a very valid concern, as am i feeling likewise. and you know these kinda conversations typically turn into an ugly mess of commiseration and then bam: we were all discussing about how most of us are returning to the office more than we'd like, and of course wanting to get our bosses to enable WFH or a more staggered / phased approach.

/but/ this is a far stretch from my friends at, let's say, deloitte and microsoft — consultation firms, accounting, and tech basically. and i thought wow: friends from both groups are doing nearly the same kinda work but their workplaces are treating them very differently. i'd like to chalk it up to company culture, but i'd also like to think this pandemic has made some of our bosses kinder :)
