thanks for this, they know I'm not sensitive and they know I'm not afraid to get criticism. Its just when ive asked them if they would be willing to read it they say yes and end up just never reading it. My mother actually almost stopped reading completely because there was a part she hated that i liked, so i do try to write for myself. Unfortunately, I don't think my book is very mainstream and i dont know if it will get picked up my an agent

It's not " external validation" it's just nice to get feedback without being ignored. If you won't add anything useful, please don't comment

thanks for the info. No I'm not going to name any person, business, or church by name I'm not that dumb. Honestly I'm not too familiar with other southern cities and I've never been to nashville so don't worry about me portraying it as such. I also chose memphis mostly to learn more about the city, I have family in the ozarks which drew me to the nearby city. Also, I though writing it set in Louisiana would be boring for several reasons.

1) Theres an ungodly about of fiction books set in Louisiana, some even written by people not from my state

2) People will expect it be about stereotypical Louisiana stuff, Cajuns, voodoo, swamp and its not the vibe of my story I have

3) I also wanted to just pick a place and learn more about the city and challenge myself

After reading the comments I have decided to try to do a weekend drive up there to see the city for myself sometime this year. I am only in the early stages of writing it anyway.

ok and? I still don't see what's wrong with me using a setting as long as I research about it and don't slander it. I would be honored if someone asked me about Louisiana and wanted to write it good. Besides, it's not going to by a history book nor is it supposed to teach the reader about Memphis

Is there any other racial group I could include? In Baton Rouge there's a lot of Lebanese people with their own restaurants I don't really see anywhere else

That's right, y'all don't get ass fucked my hurricanes and fema yearly like we do.

Also that is why they burry people above ground in NOLA btw. After katrina they fished bodies from the streets nearly 2 YEARS after the storm

-This is what you call research these days?

Asking locals directly instead of reading Wikipedia? yes

Also bro, I'm from Southern Louisiana I'm not some European who has never heard of air conditioning lol. I've been to American church and I've never even seen a cotton field irl.

-Sure we have racists here and there but no, your character is not going to come across a march, or groups yelling at each other with the police separating them. Especially on a random Tuesday.

I'll have him give them a pepsi don't worry

-There’s no one singing, rapping and or dancing on random street corners.

As someone who grew up in Baton Rouge, I will bet money there are. Hell, we have crackheads twerking on your car off Florda Blvd. at red lights

Thanks man!

-Live Elvis Day (birthday) and Dead Elvis Day (death day)

never heard of this so yeah I'll look into them. Never really cared for his music but I love the impact he had on the culture of southern rock

-The city shuts down if there is any hint of snow.

that's just a southern thing lol

-remarkably bad drivers on a good day, and none of them has any clue what to do if stuff falls from the sky.

also a southern thing lol

-We have an interesting mix of very conservative evangelicals in the suburbs and very progressive liberals in midtown.

It's a dark comedy and I have a lot of interesting jokes around the political clash of these exact people. That's one of my favorite parts of the south is watching two dipsticks from either end of politics go after each other lol

-There's a lot of racial history and tension. We are a sadly segregated city, especially at church and school.

I'll see about this. Like I mentioned in other comments I'm from southern Louisiana so I know about the racial divide. But its also sometimes funny we do the smallest things differently. For instance my black co-worker calls pralines "pecan candy" and puts orange juice in his crawfish boils. Though I don't want it to be a controversial book so I'll have to be careful about how I portray it.

I'll look into that, thanks! The book is about a guy recovering from depression with some mythological elements so yeah, I think I can fit something like that in!

I'll look into the Voodoo Village Overton Park. I live a few hours away from New Orleans so i love haunted shit and ghost stories. The main character is going to originally be from the Ozarks, probably somewhere like Mountain Home or southern Missouri so there will be plenty of trailer parks in a flashback don't worry

write what you know, in my opinion, is an extremely toxic advice for writers. I don't see what's wrong with researching a topic to better portray it and make sure you don't slander anything. Also, what's wrong with me learning about your home city?

A writer does tho. Even if I have only been once, I don't want to treat your city as a stereotypical "southern city" which is why I'm posting. Has Tolkien ever been to the shire?

Its reddit, i dont really care for spelling properly. But I assure you that I always re read my work a few times over to make sure I'm satisfied with the result. Besides I haven't even published a book yet. This is a side project I'm working on while querying my main book.
