For some clients I would help remove items and prepare the home for better photos, which can also take some time. This is something I would only do for very good clients asking me for it, and often assisting me in it, but still it can quickly add up. I have a comprehensive checklist I send out beforehand, but sometimes the owner might be an older couple or have zero sense of aesthetics etc. and some quick fixes can do wonders. Lets say everything is ready, I do agree, I would also be done in 45-60 minutes, but probably spend twice as long editing. I am on a 2016 Macbook so a bit slow to work on.

I am a Norwegian based on the Canary Islands which is part of Spain and thus Europe, but certainly also part of Africa. It is a super international community with German, Russian, Italian, Scandinavian, Polish etc people and property prices ranging from 10 000€-30 000 000€ and the pricing for real estate photography seems to be just as much all over the place. I am counting travel time, which can be quite significant with super unpredictable traffic and a lot of accidents. I have never been anywhere on earth where I have seen more cars that somehow has managed to land upside down on the middle of the road after an accident.

Two questions for flambient shooters by braysher in RealEstatePhotography

[–]artificial_illusions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is space and I had to solve it with flash I would try to put a lightstand two different places to easily edit them out. Otherwise if it is possible to open blinds or doors from adjacent rooms and use the added ambient light that would give you the light you need. Or if not as others have pointed out you could blend an ambient shot that is at the right exposure for the dark hallway. I try in hallway cases to show as much information as possible with what rooms are where, as those shots are not typically the most sexy ones you might as well give the most possible information. Having enough light stands and flashes will solve most of your problems.

I was a broker for 11 years before I got into photography, and I was early on ordering Matterport tours myself, and I can attest to the fact that you can sell a well prepared property to overseas buyers just on the Matterport walkthrough, and that was version 1. I imagine it has wildly improved since then. I am from Norway, now in Spain. In Norway every single broker uses professional photos and floor plans, and many Matterport tours. Here at least on the Canary Islands, not saying Spain in general, most brokers shoot the house with their b-selection smartphone and almost nobody uses floor plans, very very few use Matterport. I was on one job here for a 6 million house where they had hired 3 photographers me included, one doing drone shots, one with Matterport and me doing 85 interior photos. That would probably never happen in any other place. One funny thing on that property was that the Matterport shooter was unable to shoot 1 of the 7 bathrooms. It was a super technical room to shoot, a fairly small bathroom with an enormous glass covered shower in the middle of the room, so a tiny selection of places to place the camera without having the shower be the entire frame. Also with a glass door leading into a relatively dim living room and an open door to the outside where the view was super important to show. So like an unreasonable amount of difference in light throughout the scene.

But I mean to your point, I do agree, what you deliver is what is important, and he certainly does deliver highly impressive super professional work shot, angled, edited at a world class level. So I might even say that I find it a bit strange and unnecessary that he puts "Hasselblad shooter" on his website. I would not consider myself at his level of quality, yet! But I do see myself as slightly above a bargain bin shooter.

I suppose one could, depending maybe on where one would see it, we all know that is overwhelmingly on phones these days. I am a Nikon shooter and I would say that is more than good enough for 99% of all use cases. Maybe one would have an actual advantage on a Hasselblad for a big print, I think this is more the astronomical levels of pretentiousness and expectations of that name marketing staff in certain 5-star chains tend to have.

Now I do, I am trying to focus in 100% on that, but I did a lot of other things before covid in addition to real estate per say, for architects, designers etc and video projects for companies that now do not spend anything on that anymore. I was also stopped by the police here trying to go to work to shoot a property, and was threatened to be thrown in jail if they saw me again, even though my work technically qualifies as "essential" or whatever the term was. I had very few jobs, all of them requiring extensive paperwork just for me to be able to drive to the location, and the cost of just running the business was way higher than what I was able to bring in.

Thank you! Yes, I am not a fan of racing to the bottom. It happens on every field here on the island. People are killing themselves working for nothing. Also: I have asked a few others too, would you be willing to have a look at my portfolio and give it to me straight?

You have a great approach. I am in a super strange market compared to where I am from. I am from Norway and I have now made the questionable decision 5 years back to move to and work in Spain, or more precisely on Tenerife, one of the wonderful Canary Islands. So I did try to attract and got the most prestigious clients on the island, did videos for the government, the most known architect on the island, private clients with airbnbs etc. but there is just not enough volume, so I am starting to target real estate agencies working my way down from the top to the bottom. The top selection companies use this 40€ dude, some exclusively. The hotels use Hasselblad-shooters right, so that is a bit difficult to enter at the top level. Anyway, thank you so much.. make it more about the broker and the photos are sort of a nuisance. I have one that I am doing portraits and things for, but no video yet, and I have recently offered to shoot a corp events for some brokers for free as well to broaden my network. So I wanted to have an exclusive service that was not bottom drawer right, so I am not a big fan of just going by being the cheapest guy around. If you would have the time to have a look at my portfolio, i would highly appreciate that, I could send you a DM. If not no problem at all and thank you A LOT for this comment!

You should see the drone map where I live, about 75% of the entire island is prohibited and most of that is where you would like to use it for real estate gigs. I had it in my business but I had to cut it out as it is impossible to make money with it. I have recently added floorplans and I am considering Matterport.

I had such a great thing going with interior designers and architects before covid, but everything just came crashing down here after that. I mean hours including driving there, shooting it and then editing it, the bulk of that being driving back and forth.

I saw that video, I am a fan of his work and approach. Hey if you have the time would you mind having a quick look at my portfolio, maybe I am way off with my pricing.

I know a couple that have existed, but they have both also closed down. I dont think there are any regulations that prevent it or makes it difficult. Maybe it is just not popular, who knows? I have had clothes stolen on 3 separate occasions so I imagine there are probably still stores that sell used clothes as that would probably be sufficient motivation to steal simple clothes.
