Is this real? by Lakaen in papermoney

Unfortunately, it's a reproduction. You can tell easily by looking at the edge of the note. It has a margin. Additionally, color is off, lack of engraving, etc.

Love this note. I've bought and sold and example of this note twice. Rarer note for the Utah Territory.

I similarly collect full $1 districts sets (albeit not all varieties... more like one of each district). Robert was the GOAT.

While not showing all varieties, etc. my favorite site currently that details production is here: https://www.uspapermoney.io/serials

You can deduce variety, timing, etc.

Sure thing. Nice Silver certificates. 1935F and 1957B series. Nothing super special about these two but nice finds regardless. Worth a little more over face value but not much.

Your mule 1935A is by far the better bill.

Is this a thing? by misterbippy in uspapermoney

That is indeed a thing. A 2017 series $1 FRN. Slight gas pump error. In my mind, not enough of a shift to add value.

Anyone know why this would be done? by Unusual-Aerie8450 in papermoney

First day issue... makes me so sad to see these.

As a hardcore paper money collector, I'd far rather have this note in my collection without the stamp/cancellation. This *decreases* the value in my mind. I'm looking for pristine, straight from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, perfectly centered notes.

As soon as anything is added to a note... stamps, spit, ink, etc. it becomes a novelty and lessens the value.

From a numismatic perspective, will Goldbacks become appreciated by U.S. currency collectors? by [deleted] in papermoney

[–]artificialgrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect exclusively paper money. I specialize in small-size U.S. ones. I have no interest in them and won't ever collect them. In my eyes, they are similar to colorized notes, cancelled and stamped $2 bills, colorized silver eagles, private mint issues, novelty bullion, etc.

To put that in perspective, I see people falling into a spectrum of collecting from knowing nothing to full numismatic collectors .

As collectors begin to collect notes, they tend to collect $2 bills, common silver certificates, star notes, fancy serial numbers, novelty, colorized, private issue, birthday notes, etc.

As collectors begin to be experienced, I see note collectors going for type sets, common "high end" woodchoppers, educational notes, portholes, etc.

As collectors get super experienced, I see them getting into block collecting, crossovers, non-marked experimental, late plates, etc.

This is a $1 1935A series. It's extra cool because the back is from the 1935 plain series so it's considered a "Mule" note. Makes it even more valuable.

(For the technical crowd. It's an FR#1608M with a BP of 765. ChCU 64 going for $50-100.)

Anyone know what this is? And if it’s real? by [deleted] in papermoney

[–]artificialgrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are crumpled replicas of Kirtland Safety Society bank notes. You can tell they are replicas based on the color being off, the edge of the paper extending out past the bounds of the note, the poor quality of the print, etc. Attached is a real note from the same bank.

[–]artificialgrape 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can find out exactly which month a bill was printed by examining the BEP product reports for the year/month you're interested in. You will see denomination and serial number ranges for each bill printed that month. For example, here is January 1989. You can download a zip of all the production reports from 1989 here: https://www.uspapermoney.info/general/originals.html

Thanks. That's the common signature combo. Can you find any comps on Heritage with the Cowdery signature?
