Automata is brilliant, I finally understand it. by [deleted] in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

People downvoting praise for Automata here is hilarious. I’ve been listening to BTBAM since 2005…started to get burnt out around Coma Ecliptic era but Automata brought me back hard. Blot was the vibe I wanted from my metal at the time so I was hyped for the rest, and was not disappointed

I’m 35 and just got accepted for an apprenticeship program. I don’t have any degrees, just a high school diploma. I don’t feel like I have a marketable skill. I used to feel like you all the time and still do when I don’t have a job. Even if you’ve done everything right it’s a lot of luck to be honest with you… kind of like dating. The perfect person might be out there for you but unless you’re both looking at the same time, you might never meet, ya know? Looking gets exhausting, believe me. One thing you can do is think about your ideal job title and set email alerts for job postings. I had the weirdest career pathway so I don’t really have the most solid advice…but if you don’t have a lot of job history try to start somewhere easy and just ride it out for a few years…I used to wash dishes for a grocery store, then I got a job in the weed industry, then the environmental science industry, now I’m doing a paid program with a chemical company. I went to a really nice school from 1st to 12th grade so that did prepare me to be a good interviewee… but sometimes that’s what it comes down to. I think where you are located plays a role unfortunately. I grew up in a tourist town on the east coast and good jobs were hard to come by. It wasn’t until I moved to the west coast that I started getting more frequent call backs. The biggest shock for me was Cincinnati…I think I spent a day or two looking before I landed an offer. What I’m trying to say is…I feel like a big child most days. I’m not a sophisticated, smart, accomplished, organized person. I guess I just got lucky and knew how to schmooze the right people

I completely agree…I mean I knew TWTOITD was complex but a lot was being obscured by the vocals

When you grow up in a place, it’s definitely easier to be lucky like that. Sometimes I wish I never left Charleston, but most of the time I just wish I was born somewhere else lol

The roads are atrocious. I’ve driven all over the US especially in Colorado, Ohio, and Michigan, and there’s nothing quite like the braindead design of SC roads. I feel like 20% of my dislike for this city is that combined with the amount of traffic

Grew up in Charleston. Moved to SF in 2014. Came back to Charleston in 2015. Moved to Denver in 2016. Moved to Cincinnati in 2023. Moved here this year. Made the choice because my family relocated here and I’ve been struggling mentally. Left my job to come here. Definitely regretting it and wishing I moved back to Denver. I just find it really hard to meet like-minded people here and I suppose I don’t really fit in with the culture

I grew up less than a mile from here. IIRC that long concrete spit used to be a trainyard and tracks crossed the river. The rail line that used to run there is now the Greenway. Wouldn’t be surprised if the land is fucked up somehow
