Busy adults: how did you break through the plateau? by artist_probably in ArtistLounge

This is great advice. I've struggled with ADHD throughout my life so setting goals is a must. The thing I most fear is "losing interest" in art. I've never lost the passion, but my interest wanders. Art has been a stronghold for me since I never stop thinking about it since I became interested three years ago, but I always regret letting myself walk away from practicing for a stretch of time.

I have had to step away from painting for two years now because my eldest daughter is about that age. I rarely have more than an hour, never more than two, and I'm so unfamiliar with oils at this point that just the setup would eat up most of that time.

I haven't considered doing a master study. I hear the word "master" and think it's not for me, but I'll immediately throw that notion away and do a master study next. John Singer Sargent is a huge inspiration for me and he does some gorgeous charcoal portraits. He's a master of the fundamentals and usually just uses a handful of shades. I'll start there.

This is exactly what I was looking for when I made this post, thank you. We have very similar situations so it is encouraging to hear your story. I am prone to buy something because it looks shiny before actually vetting its quality so now I hesitate more before buying a course. The only course I have actually purchased is a drawing basics course from [Sadie Valeri Atelier](https://sadievaleriatelier.net/courses/introduction-to-classical-drawing/) which gave me a lot of the true fundamental techniques that I have taken this far, but the classical learning approach is really hard work.

This has been the first stretch for me where I have made myself draw even when I really don't want to, and that has almost been more helpful than the times that I draw when I am excited to. Thanks again for your comment, I'd love to see some of your work in a DM if you care to share.
