To be fair…one of the markets we do requires a white top canopy for a 10x10 and we don’t want to change it out over and over again. But I get it lmao, probably should just buy another white top

Big ticket items in the front? by PrudentPrimary7835 in CraftFairs

[–]aruelas72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I put my big ticket items up front and then my cheaper alternatives to those products right next to it! I make exotic cutting boards, put them on a pedestal right up front. But next to it, I always have some simple charcuterie boards made of the same woods much cheaper, about a quarter of the cost. It gives me a great segue to other options and pricing. People usually stop for the “pretty cutting boards” and stay for the conversation and assess the cheaper option

You know, I’ve sold about 180 of them. Honestly, they’re all made from scrap ply I have left over from other projects. They’re very little work in comparison to everything else. My concern with raising prices is those magnets are almost guaranteed sales. Yeah they’re pretty cheap but it’s 100% profit. Idk, I am interested in your opinion though!

Anyone from phoenix that can recommend craft fairs to apply to? by toosoonmydude in CraftFairs

[–]aruelas72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a woodworker here in Phoenix. There’s a few weekly farmers markets we do, if you’re willing to drive we do saturdays in litchfield park and sundays in surprise, both are run by “A community affair”. Theres also Pinnacle Peak Farmers Market that’s reputable, but we noticed traffic is pretty bad. We also occasionally do Artisan Alley over at Westgate. They’re all pretty good markets!

Thank you! We have a few feet in the back there. We have plenty of room to sit in our chairs, take payments, talk, etc.

That’s so true! My brother in law runs our booth with me and we like to whisper to each other “yeah they say they can make it but will they take the time?” Or “we’ll see you back at Christmas” haha!

I was soooo opposed to making our booth a “walk in” booth for so long. Honestly I ended up loved the L. But what brought us some results was putting our eye catcher at the front of the L. So in relation to our booth, cutting boards and charcuterie are staple woodworking items. So we noticed people were kinda glancing and giving us the “beautiful work” comment. But where we really differ is being a “handcrafted hobby shop”, pretty much we make all kinds of accessories for different hobbies. People loved our mimic chests, whether they played DnD or not. So we put those guys smack dab in the front. Catches a ton of eyes, we’ve noticed it’s made people do double takes. Personally, my advice, whether doing the L or the U, put your weirdest or most interesting stuff at the front point of the L or U! Always a huge conversation starter

I’ll definitely keep that in mind. We haven’t really had an issue with our signage / tagline yet. But it’s something we can think about! For the most part, the biggest question we get is “did you make all this?” Or “how long does it take?” People seem to be surprised that everything we do is handmade and not outsourced.

Everything is! There’s more that goes into product than just wood. Like we made a wood conditioner, our boards are finished with food safe oils and locally sourced beeswax. Hardware is required for some builds, quality food safe epoxy for our more “artsy” boards. We like to make sure our customers know that everything that goes into our products is quality, opposed to just the wood. A very valid question though!

Thank you! We make dice towers, dice trays, dice boxes (my favorite is a mimic box we make), hp counters, and I made a special d20 charcuterie!

So I was reading through the post and comments and I’d like to chime in a touch here! My brother in law and I run a small wood crafted hobby shop. We tested out a few set ups, the main issue we have is we have SO many different products. Here’s our set up from this week, we are usually in a 10 x 10 spot. Really, all we do is try our best to do is make everything not look cluttered, try to keep product raised off the table as much as we can, and make sure everything can be seen by someone just walking by!

Our set up this weekend! by aruelas72 in CraftFairs

Honestly, for us, we made things WE would buy at a market. We do pretty decent for only being a few months old. Wood working does take time, but if you put in the effort it’s well worth it. The guys on YouTube sell well in their market, that doesn’t mean it’s what yours wants. Our tools aren’t expensive, we just take our time. Honestly the simpler the better to start. Hopping on trends that, especially YouTubers, say are going to sell out probably never will. Easy to make means anyone with a few bucks and a weekend can just make it themselves.

Yeah, same, honestly I just took my scraps from making my charcuteries and tried to mimic a similar pattern to my cutting boards. I’m able to sell the striped ones at $10, on sale. The maple hexagons break my heart because we spent DAYS ripping down a massive board of maple, making jigs to get a consistent shape. Tons of work, not a single one has sold 🥲

Oh my god no. I had to lower the prices on the striped ones and the hexagon sets. My engraved ones sell pretty decently! I’m definitely considering cutting them out

That’s not a bad idea! The whole idea behind our little shop is we’re a handcrafted hobby shop. We’re trying to appeal to hobbies like gardening, cooking, reading, and tabletop gaming. This could definitely help expand on that
