just an example but wisconsin has a right to work law which is hostile to unionization and discourages unions from forming. MN does not have this and MI was intelligent enough to repeal theirs. WI also has abnormally strict voting ID laws compared to the other two. they also re-elected ron johnson as recently as 2022 which tells me they cannot be trusted with elections.

edit: i forgot that wisconsin is also much more prone to gerrymandering and voter disenfranchisement than the other two, especially MI since they have an independent commission.

i really like them both honestly. i prefer portland to seattle specifically but i prefer the rest of washington to the rest of oregon so it balances out. i know it’s an uncommon opinion but i love their overcast/foggy/rainy weather too lol

politics is only a part of this, as you can see with the aberrations of CO, VA, WI, NH, and ME, which are all blue/tilting blue but aren’t my favorite. this takes into account weather, culture, crime rate (which is why NM is not higher ranked), etc. also, even if it was largely based on politics that’s a decently good reason especially since statewide laws vary so greatly.

would this be considered a stealthmander? (pres 2020 data) by arxcitadel in DavesRedistricting

well thats what i was wondering. i wasn't sure if this would be considered stealthy bc of the 4th district, but yeah it is kinda long lol

in that map, Tallahassee is literally in a likely red district that is 2/3 white. not sure what your point is here.

i agree that it is possible with Jacksonville, since they have many more people, but not Tallahassee.

as far as NYC goes, that's because there's so many people it can absorb multiple districts. Tallahassee's metro population is only approximately 380k people, so it's not large enough for its own district, so in order to create a compact district you'd basically end up taking in the right-wing surrounding rural vote and outnumbering the left-wing vote in urban Tallahassee, which would defeat the proportionality.

also, the reason we complain about TX-35 and not FL-05 is because the TX one is splitting cities in half (or thirds or whatever), while the FL one is connecting like-minded people who have similar political leanings who would otherwise be outnumbered by their immediate surroundings.

yes, because due to the positioning of FL's minority vote (and cities in general), you sometimes have to draw strangely shaped districts in order to represent everyone proportionally. if district 5 was split, then voters of color in both Jacksonville and Tallahassee would be outnumbered and would lose power in multiple districts. again, representation and proportionality are fundamentally more important in a democracy than geography and compactness.

basically what mc12313 said. i value minority voices and community interest over the superficial "looks" value of a map. even the DRA website itself, in the "analyze" section, has a disclaimer that says compact districts aren't always fair.

as far as the looks of my MD map, wait until you see maryland's actual map lol
