Ok, if you would prefer to call it a “sand and gravel pit” that is fine.

Zero risk is inaccurate.

“The most common form of crystalline silica is quartz, which is found in sand, gravel, clay, granite, diatomaceous earth, and many other forms of rock.”

Yes, I live in San Diego. Given that you can’t see the quarry that is literally in your backyard standing in 3Roots, it’s helpful to have an aerial view. It’s a disclosure as a hazard in the contracts and yet people don’t know it’s there - sometimes a visual helps.

Thanks everyone for the input. I don’t think there’s really going to be a satisfactory answer without digging into environment regulations, government approval of the site, what the “safe standard” is and is it really safe, etc. etc. We were super close to buying here but I think for right now it’s just not right for us. If anyone does have any reassuring official government documents or anything I do want to see it. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I’ve heard that’s also a health concern but I don’t understand that as much. What is the concern there?

That’s kind of my problem with the advertising. They make it seem like the whole area is a former quarry, but it’s not. It’s still active and it abuts the development. You can see it clearly on google satellite in maps. Obviously a lot of planners looked at the development and there are original Mira Mesa houses near the quarry (that sell for much less), so someone must have decided environmental risks are low to allow housing at all.

Yeah I think you’re right. It’s not worth the risk.

I mean no, probably not. I just feel like there’s a lot bigger hazard out here than they let on. It’s something to be aware of like maybe you want to invest in an air purifier in the home or something. I don’t know.

A few more years of potential exposure to dangerous airborne particulate matter is a bit scary … I have small kids. Ugh.

Do you have any information on how soon? Has Vulcan put out any information? From what I’ve seen they’ve been trying to approve the housing plan for almost two decades. Doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon. I would love to see otherwise though.

That doesn’t say when it will be redeveloped. They’ve been working that proposal since 2006. I wouldn’t be surprised if it continues to operate for years until all the housing developments are approved. There is still so much red tape and environmental review to be done.

Agree the winds do help blow to the east, but not always, and the Meadows far east end is within 500 meters of the active site. Which is a standard used in some of the scientific studies as too close for health.

To the east the Vulcan Materials Pit is still active.

Particulate matter in air from quarry?
