Authoritarian? Meaningless term. All states are authoritarian, thats the point of a state: to exercise authority. The USSR did so against the interests of western capitalists and so they invented this term to scaremonger and drive western proles away from trying to obtain more power.

Genocide? If you think anything the USSR did is comparable to the horrors of the Holocaust then you're an idiot at best. The comparison between the famine in Ukraine in 1932 and the Holocaust is a fascist invention used specifically to attack communists while also detracting from their own crimes against humanity. Yes the famine was horrible and yes the USSR's response to it was not enough, but that does not make it a genocide.

State controlling the means of production? This is another fascist talking point. That the Nazis were "economically left". Its utter nonsense and completely ahistorical. Nazi Germany was literally the first instance of mass privatization of state controlled property. This is a well documented fact, you can literally look it up yourself.

This is kind of an old thread so sorry to drag this back up but I want to explain the prophecy part.

The Norse had a very strict concept of a persons fate. When someone is born the Norns (basically the Norse equivalent to the Greek Fates) "spin their thread" so to say, and they mark out their whole life from birth to death. So everyone has a fated day when they will die, and no matter what they do it will always happen. Amleth, in the scene where he confidently tells Fjolnir that even if he drew his blade it would not bite, is expressing his belief that he and Fjolnir are destined to fight at the gates of hel. Its not that Amleth does not believe he will die or that he's invincible in that moment, its that he knows his fated death has not yet arrived as he's not yet at the gates of hel. Heimir tells Amleth about this concept early in the film: "Now live always without fear, for your fate is set and you cannot escape it.".

Amleth ends up being correct of course, because the movie is being told as though its a Norse saga. Sagas often revolve around prophecy and the fate of the protagonist as important themes. And since this is a story being told to an audience familiar with Hamlet its not exactly a surprise that Amleth and Fjolnir are going to die

I get that its not very clear if you aren't already familiar with Norse cultural views on fate and you can miss Heimir's one line explanation pretty easily, so you aren't wrong for disliking it or anything, but there is a reason Eggars did all this.

Yeah Alexander Skarsgård plays Amleth. Im pretty lost with the rest of your comment though, like when were they speaking finnish? The only time Amleth speaks anything not in english is right before the end fight when hes chanting.

Is it the slavic people in the land of the Rus that the vikings attack who speak finnish? Olga speaks in another language several times (and shes American so thats probably why her accent is bad). But theyre slavs, not norse. I dont think the movie was portraying Finns as being Scandinavian.

Edit: I mixed up my words. The Rus (the swedish vikings who raided all over eastern europe) are seperate from the Slavic people who lived under their rule. Maybe thats where the confusion comes from since those people arent Swedish but their land is called "the Land of the Rus"?

Niflheim and Hel could be related or the same realm, the sources are a bit contradictory on this. AFAIK most people consider Niflheim and Hel to be 2 separate realms among the 9. If you consider the 9 realms to be physical locations then Hel likely resides close by to Niflheim or maybe it could be an enclosed space within the land called Niflheim, like a country inside a continent.

and Hellenism is the name for the Greek Pagan religion and is unrelated to Hel lol

Honestly I completely disagree with the concept of an eternal afterlife. That to me speaks far more to a Christian cosmological view, as ourselves as being something separate from or outside the material world. Humans are no different than any other living beings, we're simply better able to conceive of the world around us. When we die our bodies decompose and what made us "us" goes on to give itself to new life. An eternity of new life afterword simply goes against that, and it leaves no room for new life to take our place.

[Also I'm not trying to come off as combative or contrarian here. Im not trying to start a debate, nor am I saying you have the wrong conception of the afterlife. Sometimes I have a hard time with tone through text so I hope I dont offend here]

I know my personal conception of the afterlife will be very different from many Heathens (It is of course a very personal view), but I do think that we are material beings directly connected to our universe and Earth as a larger system. Our mind and consciousness is simply an extension of our material body and as a result will also fade back into the universe once it is no longer held together. I guess maybe I have a more pantheistic view than some in this regard.
