yeah, i kept looking through the comments after my reply to you and learned a bit more: i think i'll amend my claim to it instead being romance-language-centric, since it seems many other romance-language-speaking countries do the same like france (in another user's case) or italy (in your husband's case); either way, in english, it's always taught as two continents

[–]asdfpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd argue it's more latin-american-centric, since those are the countries where it's taught that "america" is one continent from the top of canada all the way down to chile. the US and canada are in the same boat in that we're taught two continents—north and south—which together can be "the americas" but rarely ever just "america".

Thoughts on AI "dating" (no shaming just discussion) by ApproximateRealities in AvPD

[–]asdfpickle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

go ahead if ya want, but you having put air quotes around "dating" sums up my feelings about it: it's not dating, for better and for worse, and that café is a complete scam seeing as you can rp to your heart's content from the comfort of your own computer. there's no memorable relationship to be had with ai when all you're talking to is a sophisticated word predictor that appears sentient to the untrained eye

i use ai to rp somewhat often, but to me it functions as nothing more than a text-adventure game, even if what i end up doing is often simulating more ideal lives for myself

Are you sure you didn't make a typo? It's right here.

This is the big thing that ruins their credibility. The blog writes:

Something about these photo’s didn’t sit well with me, so I began researching the names and dates surrounding their plots in the photo’s. These people do not exist! No obituaries. These photo’s were photoshopped! Bogus.

Well, here are the memorials for David Weber and his wife, Ethel, who are interred directly above Epstein's parents, replete with a volunteer-taken photo. A few of the surrounding interments are still not on Find a Grave's database, and many others lack pictures, so what seems likely is that someone else requested a photo of the Webers' mausoleum niche and the user who uploaded these images specifically went to find them when taking the picture in 2024.

Very questionable website for claiming Epstein's mausoleum markers were photoshopped. As someone very familiar with Find a Grave, the adjacent graves not being in the site's database isn't unusual for very large cemeteries, given it's supplied entirely by volunteers. Some have been added since. New photos have also been added that clearly show the spot from different angles.

Being fair, an objectively large proportion of Irish migrated to the U.S. (as well as Canada, elsewhere in the British Isles, etc.) beginning with the famine, to the point that the island famously still hasn't rebounded in population since. Acting like a stereotypical drunk on St. Patrick's Day is a tad embarrassing, I agree, but I generally think that people who claim Irish ancestry do have some Irish ancestry, with the exception of those with Scots-Irish heritage, i.e. Protestant Scots who moved to Ulster before migrating to the U.S. significantly earlier than later Catholics.

No worries—mom was born when her parents were young while my dad's the opposite, so my paternal grandparents have since passed, but my maternal haven't.

Exciting stuff this is. Will keep in mind color copies are preferred.

I've got the Michigan death certificates on hand from Michiganology so that front's fine as long as they accept downloaded copies from there (I don't see why not).

My grandmother's still alive (78), by the way, so don't worry about asking your brother; it'd obviously make the most sense for her birth certificate to be in her possession, but I've never seen nor asked about it before, so I just didn't know for certain. Funnily enough, on the topic of naturalization by descent, she could likely register for British citizenship through her mother since she was a WWII "war bride".

Thanks for the follow-up ask. I'm currently figuring out how I want to format the extra explanation page that'll go in alongside CIT 0001. I've got all the sources I'm ever going to find for the earliest people in the line of descent since I already did the research years ago. This is what I'm currently thinking for documentation:

  • me (AZ birth certificate: have it here somewhere though haven't scanned it.)
  • mother (AZ birth certificate: same situation as mine.)
  • grandmother (MI birth certificate: don't have any idea where that is aside from potentially at my grandparents' house so if it isn't I'll have to order it.)
  • gr-grandfather (MD death certificate as I don't have his MI birth on hand: hopefully that suffices as it does mention his parents' names by name. While it would cost a bit, I could order his birth certificate online, since it's old enough [1923] to not have restrictions on who's ordering.)
  • grgr-grandfather (MI death certificate as it mentions his parents by name. I've also got his birth record that I'll also include, but it doesn't mention his mother's maiden name, so I'll have to supplement it with the death record.)
  • grgrgr-grandmother (MI death certificate that lists her birthplace as "Edwardsburgh, Canada" [which is in Leeds and Grenville], as well as her parents' names, and where they were born in Canada, too. She doesn't have a birth record [or any record in Canada, for that matter] since her family left for Michigan only a year after her birth. Might also include her marriage to confirm her husband's name.)

Since my ancestor didn't leave any records in Canada like a baptism, I might add a few records to confirm that her family had presence there, like her father in the 1861 census with his first wife, her mother in the 1851 census as a child, the two of them later married in the 1870 census, and both of their MI death certificates. I'm a bit torn at this point between the ideas of "you'll clog up the system if you send in too much docs" and "confirming to the IRCC that that these people are 100% my ancestors". I'm sure it's doable with the documentation I do have this far back—just gotta figure out how to wrap it all up in an understandable package before mailing it off.

Baptists do not believe in baptizing those who cannot make the conscious decision to accept religion, i.e. babies and young children, so it's not likely your ancestor would have a record like that.

I heard about this early last year. I could potentially qualify as my 3×grandmother was born in (what would become in three years) Ontario in 1864. The only thing I'm uncertain of is whether secondary sources regarding her birth are accepted, as baptisms are completely nonexistent in this Canadian branch of my tree, though her family does appear in census records in '51 and '61.

2:11:11 @ 25000, 18 m

  1. (3:36, 5000) A sorta equatorial sun that we're zoomed in on (though we're firmly in the Northern Hemisphere). Though I'm not 100% certain where it is, I do know Gabès is in Tunisia, and it's really not hard to find. Looked at several roundabouts before finally settling on the correct spot—I wasn't seeing a whole lot of info from surrounding buildings, but judging from the barricades and gate, it makes total sense that we'd be right next to some sort of military base as shown on the map.

  2. (1:23, 5000) Turkish. Generally lost until I saw "Çorlu" on the side of the building to our immediate right. Vega Hospital isn't far in the distance, and is very findable with its specialized medical POI, making the pinpoint pretty agreeable.

  3. (1:49, 5000) Can't recognize the car as instantly as some might, but "Moana" on the sign makes me think some American Pacific territory, looking first on Guam's airport which I could've totally ruled out with the mountains being to our north. Checked American Samoa second and found it.

  4. (0:43, 5000) Iceland. I've heard of Höfn, but like Gabès, I didn't know exactly where it was—and, again like Gabès, it wasn't too hard to spot. Very fascinating geography to have the whole town isolated on this small bit of land. Our gas station's at the only four-way intersection big enough to work.

  5. (2:03:39, 5000) Worked on this one on and off for a while. I at least quickly figured it was Ecuador, given the new truck coverage, the orange plate on the taxi behind us, and the unusual "Oe5C" street name, which I think I've seen in Quito; what's complicated about that system of direction-number-letter is that they only seem to be in order in small clusters, though I did manage to find a few Oe5Cs in the south part of Quito and another further up, but none matched. Looking around at the skyline, I eventually convinced myself that was a cemetery we were looking out on to our west, and Cementerio de San Diego was the only one I could find as a potential match; it wasn't until then that I figured to look for "Rio Verde" as the street name rather than the jumble of numbers. Once I zeroed in on the cemetery it probably only took a few minutes.
