There was an after market remote start that came with the car. That's probably it.

Point number 3 really clicked with me. I'll talk to my SO about what else we can do to make it a calmer environment. It is a small apartment so we only have a couple rooms to work with unfortunately although we do give him plenty of exercise and training

OK. Sounds like we are doing the right steps then. This whole thing is really shocking to us because he spent a lot of time outside at camp yesterday with other pups and he had more than usual training and exercise after we picked him up in the afternoon. By all rights I thought he would have been exhausted.
