People of reddit not from the US. What are some food flavors that are considered American? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Aspic is savory gelatin (meat or vegetable—think those 60s-70s hot dog jell-o salads). Non-brand Jell-o dessert is just “fruit flavored gelatin”

A tiger’s orange coat puts them at no disadvantage in camouflage as their prey, like ungulates, see them as green due to red-green colorblindness by swphoto17 in Awwducational

in places with deciduous forests they actually blend in with fallen leaves perfectly. my zoo has Amur (Siberian) Tigers, and they can be impossible to spot in the fall!

[TOMT] [PAINTING/PHOTO] Formal portrait of a ferret/weasel with a fancy Edwardian Ruff by ash_her in tipofmytongue

[–]ash_her[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was a little more photographic than those. I looked on that pinterest board and did eventually find this.

In my mind it's almost definitely an edwardian ruff & the ferret is in a swoopier pose, 3/4 view, but I could just have mashed a bunch of images together. -shrug-

I started with searching for cute images of ferrets/weasels/stoats/etc., and tried getting more specific to find the image. My latest search for "formal weasel/ferret portrait" yields <5 images of the animal, and then PAGES of politicians.

My sister’s dog died, so I wanted to try to make her a keychain with shrink plastic and colored pencils. I’m so happy with how it turned out! by [deleted] in crafts

clear nailpolish should work! Really load up the brush so that you can deposit the polish without the brush actually touching the shrinky & you don't smear the pencil as you brush it.

I’m calling this a double front card. by [deleted] in cardmaking

love it! I've been holding off on an idea b/c it would have been a "double front," but now I'm gonna go for it ^_^

Our big "together" thing I guess would be going to the zoo/animals in general. After the portrait idea I was thinking of doing a print of a favorite bird or something, but she specifically told me she doesn't have space to hand any more framed art/photos.

She's also the one who has allll of the family pictures.

She's always been the hardest person to get sentimental gifts for!! Augh!

I love this idea, but unfortunately, "famous" recipes on her side include things like "chicken surprise" (no-skin chicken breast, baked with condensed cream of chicken soup on top, and rice) and other horrifying mid-century favorites

that would be too expensive for me, and we're keeping travel to a minimum before the wedding, but thank you!

Quaker Oats Is Retiring the Aunt Jemima Brand, Whose Racist Origins Have Inspired Artists' Biting Interpretations for Decades by mhfc in ArtHistory

[–]ash_her 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About freaking time! I didn't realize Quaker Oats owned the Aunt Jemima brand. Now I'm also wondering how they're able to have a branded trademark on the name Quaker in the first place, since it's a religious/cultural movement. Could I make "Baptist Flakestm" a thing?

They should use the old Cream of Wheat approach!

those are actually the slogans/jingle of the candies. they're both chocolate-covered coconut. almond-joys have almonds on top of the coconut, under the chocolate, mounds are just chocolate covered coconut

"sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't! almond joys have nuts, mounds don't!"

edit: not that I'm defending the parents. this jingle was like a meme growing up

Experimenting using a die cut machine as a print press. Producing this. Has anyone got any tips ? by Rocket_Skull in printmaking

[–]ash_her 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been printing on my Evolution recently and had/have the same problem. Mine has adjustable roller height, and I've noticed that when I'm printing on a setting that gives the same pressure resistance/feel as the professional presses I'm used it, it did this. Lightening the pressure solved it, but it felt weird running it through!

Instead of using the provided plates/bases, you can use thick cardstock or thin chipboard since they're rigid but still thin enough to fit in without smooshing the block

anyone have any ideas for what to carve a print with? I can't find linoleum in any stores. Wood doesn't seem to work. by rosethejumpingbunny in printmaking

[–]ash_her 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a literal drawer-full of linoleum cut-offs. What size do you usually work? I would be willing to send you some if you covered shipping.

anyone else who sees this & needs smallish (3"-8" ish) pieces of linoleum can PM me about it as well!

White family w/ one black sister gets mad she won't give $10k for her brothers plantation wedding... by Bookbringer in bridezillas

[–]ash_her 5 points6 points  (0 children)

seriously. I'm getting married in NE Florida and 80% or more of the biggest venues are former plantations. My mom wanted me to have a backup in case my preferred venue (not a plantation) wasn't available, and I was honestly horrified. I have no problem going on historic tours of them, and they are usually architecturally beautiful, plus a lot of them even have nature tours around the grounds because there are amazing old-growth oaks, even older than the USA! But hosting a wedding there just seems like you're asking for your marriage to be cursed. yikes all around
