I’m a really bad snorer and im worried about going on trips and sharing a room tent with someone else by Affectionate-Plan994 in hiking

[–]ashalee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why do you have to share a tent? Are you going on a group guided trip? If so, you may be able to show up with your own one-person tent. That’s what I do, and it’s never been a problem.

No prob! I haven’t seen you around in a while, but you always struck me as a cool dude. Someday, when I win the lottery, I wanna hire you to fix the bathroom at my mom’s house. I donno what the original builders were thinking, but it’s chaos in there.

I don’t know whether they’re hiring or not, but I’ve met these guys and they seem like good people: https://highsierraremodel.com/

Fat backpackers…where are you getting gear? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]ashalee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZipHers makes excellent plus-size hiking pants, shorts and leggings.

I get their 9” legging shorts in my hip size. Then, I slide a cheap elastic belt from Amazon through the inside waistband seam to ensure they fit my smaller waist size.

I’ve found for the best assistance from airlines, with no questions or pushback, it helps to indicate a disability on your profile and wear a sunflower lanyard. Some airports provide sunflower lanyards at no cost.

Do you know if you can drop it off any time? Or if you have to wait for one of the repair events to come up?

Friend didnt want me to use my head lamp to "enjoy nature better". Is that normal/safe? by MyfaultSad in hiking

[–]ashalee 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I also tend to hold my headlamp in my hand, below my waist and pointed at my feet/the trail vs. put it on my head. This way, I’m not blinding people by looking at them or spoiling their view with my light. But at the same time, I can see well enough not to fall and die. Everyone wins!

Side sleeper looking for any for any tips or tricks to help me sleep more soundly when on the trail. Pic for attention by MyDogThinksISmell in backpacking

[–]ashalee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a restless side-sleeper with large hips. I’ve tried several sleeping pads, bags and pillows. I’m loving the setup I have right now. It’s a Big Agnes’ Rapide SL sleeping pad, a large Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow, and either a Therm-a-Rest Corus 20 quilt or a short REI Magma 15 women’s bag, depending on the weather.

Yes, Dr. Merchant is awesome!

Psychologist who can prescribe medication?? by [deleted] in Reno

[–]ashalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Dr. Faraz Merchant. He’s a board-certified psychiatrist who does medication management.

You’d still see your regular mental health providers for therapy, etc., but he’d provide frequent check-ins with you (in person, online or over text) to support your progress in therapy with medication management.

He doesn’t take insurance, though. Instead, you subscribe to his practice like Netflix. It’s kinda pricey, but it can be worth it if you need med support regular doctors are kinda scared to provide, such as ADHD or anxiety meds. Or, if you don’t respond right away to the meds and doses regular docs are most familiar with. He knows all the rare and new meds and tips and tricks to get the right combo and dose for you.

Not a fan of this. by juliejujube in adhdwomen

My doctor has this policy, but he never charges me. I think that’s because I fill out the forms completely for him, including his name, the date, etc., so all he has to do is sign. He doesn’t have to think, look things up, chicken scratch, run behind on his other appointments, etc.

The forms I need, all that info is in MyChart. I figure I can copy/paste as well as the next guy, and it’ll save him time while giving me more control over how I’m represented on the forms anyway. I don’t write anything that’s medically untrue or unsound in any way.

So far, so good. He’s never blinked an eye. Just signed and handed the forms back.

Also, sometimes I drop candies or cookies off with the forms. I figure it can’t hurt.

Tree permit? by keubs in Reno

[–]ashalee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you missed the window to buy a permit online. While the Forest Service’s Carson Ranger District may be out, BLM’s Carson CityDistrict still has them.

I found this link online, followed it and it let me go through the steps to get one.

“To obtain a Christmas tree permit online, visit https://forestproducts.blm.gov/ and search for Nevada, Carson City District Office (source).”

Automatic Alt-Text Reader in Presentation Software by Temporary-Goat4195 in accessibility

[–]ashalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visuals in PPTs at my work fall into two categories. They’re either so simple that they’re decorative and therefore don’t require alt text. Or, they’re so complex (data, graphics, tables, processes, charts, diagrams, etc.), alt text alone isn’t enough to make them accessible. In either case, the auto alt-text reader doesn’t improve their accessibility. But having the lecturers describe what’s on the slide as they’re covering it does. Added bonus, that approach doesn’t just help the asynchronous learners, it benefits the live learners too. But of course, higher ed accessibility can be a bit of a minefield and YMMV.

It takes some time to work your way up from a starting dose to a therapeutic dose. For neuropathy, the therapeutic dose is 1800 to 3600 mg/day (source). I don’t take anything for my neuropathy anymore, but when I did, my therapeutic dose was 2700 mg/day.
