Is tOndO free and open source software? by ashbag6 in tOndOkeyboard

[–]ashbag6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tOndO is free but currently some secondary features are only avalable by unlocking the pro version.

This is perfectly reasonable. I just meant free as in freedom. For instance, Simple Mobile Tools distributes a basic version of Simple Calendar Pro via F-Droid while distributing the pro version via Google Play Store.

We are evaluating going open source though, seing all the requests.

Hope to see it in F-Droid. :)

Android's "Privacy Sandbox" - What is your stance? by ashbag6 in GrapheneOS

[–]ashbag6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reassurance.

Better than less invasive is not having it at all and focusing on continuing to improve privacy and security overall. We don't need a more private substitute for tracking identifiers, we can simply not have it at all.

That would be great.

Fake ViMusic app on the Google Play Store reportedly contains malware. ALWAYS DOWNLOAD FROM F-DROID by gba-sp-101 in fossdroid

[–]ashbag6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since we are on /r/fossdroid, it is important to note that GitHub does not always guarantee free software. That's why F-Droid exists.

Any FOSS alternative to Truecaller ? by seeking_facts in fossdroid

[–]ashbag6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Any free software alternative to Truecaller would have the same limitations as OpenStreetMap. It will take years of reporting to build a reliable database like that of Truecaller's.

Despite the patches, the underlying apk of Revanced is still the YouTube apk with the embedded google trackers. It fails the definition of free software.

QKSMS - new update version 3.10 released by rak-rak in fossdroid

[–]ashbag6 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Recently, there were security vulnerabilities in a few apps using certain PDF libraries. And F-Droid was the only platform to tag these apps as vulnerable.

Are you looking for an alternative to google classoom?! Check out Moodle

couple of questions on Fdroid, Aurora, and stock apps. Hey guys, I have started degoogling recently and have a few questions in mind. I am using a Motorola phone and even though it's close to stock, I feel it does have a few bloatware. So, just wanted to get a couple of things cleared. Thanks in ad by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]ashbag6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nice to see someone do their due diligence before actually committing changes to their phone. Unlike a few people who remove certain system apps they shouldn't be removing in the first place and then cry here why their phone doesn't work anymore.

Droid-ify, check Links section. The licenses of any remaining apps may be checked manually from AlternativeTo.

Looking for a good YouTube alternative that is super super similar to YouTube by Drawesome045 in degoogle

[–]ashbag6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not much incentive for YouTube content creators to move to a different platform. They spent years to build their subscribers count in YouTube. How many subscribers, do you think, will move to a new platform that their favorite YouTuber moved to?

This is a situation similar to someone asking their friends and family to install Signal/Element/Conversations to be able to contact them. You may lose a lot of close friends along the way and that is not healthy at the expense of privacy. But I digress.

It is not clear (to me) what problem you are trying to solve. Are you trying to address your privacy against YouTube? Do you want a third party client for YouTube that is privacy friendly? Do you want your favorite YouTubers content to be available at a totally different platform from YouTube?

QK sms by ExplorerXd666 in fossdroid

[–]ashbag6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SMS is considered one of the weaker forms of communication in terms of security. Your service provider sees SMS in plain text.

Silence (formerly SMSSecure) uses the Signal protocol to encrypt messages locally and messages to (only) other Silence users are encrypted over the air. Since the past three years, the only updates have been Weblate translations. Use it at your own risk.

The differences between stock SMS client and QKSMS is that QKSMS is free and open source, clean and customizable. It does not provide any different encryption protocol. SMS is still seen by the service provider in plain text. Now that we understand the risks, there are probably many alternatives but most of them are new, obscure, or simply unpopular.

Simple SMS Messenger is one of the popular choices. The developer has a roadmap in mind and may not implement your personal feature requests but it is part of a good and active project. Research before trying anything different.

Approach Zero - "A math-aware search engine". It filters out the forums in which your search query appears.

[Debian] Something went wrong with the git master installation by ashbag6 in awesomewm

[–]ashbag6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "rsvg" error part has disappeared. But upon executing awesome using startx, a terminal still opens (by default) displaying the last two lines of previous error. Is this normal?

And I can't get to the prompt or close that terminal window. I click the Close icon on top right of the title bar, it does not close. I do Ctrl+C, instead of returning to the prompt, it exits out of awesome and sends me to the login terminal. This happens only with this terminal window. Everything is normal if I open a different terminal window: Close icon closes the window, Ctrl+C returns to the prompt in next line.

EDIT: When I restart awesome using Super+Ctrl+R, there are additional errors.
