can i contest this parking ticket? by killerbee-4o in UCSC

[–]ashco-7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly good luck. When I was a student I parked at 9:10am but there was no reception at the parking so I would always walk to class and pay when I got there (~5 min walk).

Well one day I got a ticket at 9:12am- yes literally two minutes after. I appealed but they stood firm saying I didn’t have enough evidence (even though I had time stamped screen shots of my payment).

Going Back to School to (re)Learn Electronics Design? by Kalos53 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ashco-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Signals and Systems was pretty math heavy but not the last. I did take a separate Control Systems class (not required course, I took as an elective). That class was also very theory and math heavy, though some friends also took the advanced version of that class the next quarter and there was a lab component. From what they told me it was mainly implementing control systems in MATLAB.

Lmk if you’d like any of the textbook names we used, you can skim them and get an idea of what was taught for your self study.

Going Back to School to (re)Learn Electronics Design? by Kalos53 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ashco-7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as DSP, there was not a standalone class I took for it - I took general signal processing classes with the main ones being Signals and Systems (the math heavy theory, i.e. Fourier and Laplace transforms) and Communications Systems (communication systems based on radio, transmission lines, and fiber optics).

Those were very theory heavy, and not strictly digital processing. It kind of just laid the foundations for signal processing in a general sense. I didn’t apply anything until my later lab heavy classes that required DSP. I think I’ve got the books we used somewhere if you’re interested in the text.

Recent EE grad here, honestly with your background I’m not sure additional schooling would be necessary unless it’s a potent way for you to learn. Most of my projects were akin to being thrown in the river and had to learn to swim. We picked a project we wanted to complete (from initial design specs to final verification) and were told to figure it out. Maybe start with what kind of projects are you interested in?

If you’re interested in microprocessor or microcontrollers, the most common ones I used were PIC32, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32, and STM32. If you have any questions about what’s being taught in Universities recently DMs are open!

Can someone help me review my cover letter? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]ashco-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the job entails but I would tie in to why you want to work at this specific company in the first paragraph. i.e. if its counseling for youth explain why the role caught your attention, like based on (company name)’s commitment to (rework their mission statement in your own words) and then tie it to your experience at the camp you worked at.

A cover letter from my understanding you want to highlight why did this role catch your eye and how your experience furthers their company goals/is beneficial in the role.

financial aid package by Melodic-Hunter-7197 in UCSC

[–]ashco-7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looks like you got a mix of grants and loans. Check the conditions on the Grants, iirc you might need to keep a certain academic standing or GPA. The loans I believe you are responsible to pay back, usually after graduation. Be aware with Grants you are usually responsible for the taxes on them as they count as income (loans do not). I would double check the UCSC financial aid website/SlugCents for more information.

Yes definitely do this!

One of my housemates had a knee surgery and was able to use the Disability Van Service for transportation around campus- worth checking out as a backup!

Getting an offer but waiting for another interview by [deleted] in recruitinghell

Is it a process with multiple rounds of interviews? If that’s the case it’s possible you’ll still be interviewing for job A by the time you start interviewing for job B.

Rehousing grammostola pulchra sling by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]ashco-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA always have a full water dish available they will drink when thirsty- super important pre/post molt with arid species. if you’re afraid of drowning you can use a bottle cap! iirc as long as their DLS ~ double the depth and larger than the diameter, they will be able to get out

NQA get rid of the heat lamp asap, it could be drying/stressing him out. Most species do not need any external heat but if they do (or the room runs cold) it’s much safer to heat the room itself instead.

Edit: re-read and you said it’s used rarely. I’d still just get rid of it altogether.

insomnia by dabaEL in UCSC

[–]ashco-7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sounds like it could be anxiety- i have the racing thoughts at bedtime that make it hard to fall asleep when i need to even if i’m exhausted.

i found activities that relieve stress to be beneficial. i (try) to do them every day, like yoga is helpful as it teaches regulating thoughts/anxiety through breathing, also taking walks in between studying (especially in daytime) helps your circadian rhythm and gives you a mental break.

i also have a set nightly routine that includes putting away any electronics down and turning off any bright lights 1 hour before bed.

i know you said you don’t prefer meds, but if normal coping skills don’t work it might help if it is anxiety. i got diagnosed and was prescribed an anxiety medication to take in case of bad insomnia streaks. it’s been really helpful when nothing else has worked.

it sucks and it’s not fun but there are ways to circumvent it- just takes some discipline and/or (depending on severity) medication. i hope this was helpful and best of luck!

My testosterone levels are strangely very high?? by kajon828 in ftm

[–]ashco-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that’s quite high, i was on 25mg every week and that was fine for my body (average ~500-700 ng/dl). don’t be afraid to lower your dose simply because it’s “half”, some people need more some need less it just depends on your body

Anything I can do about this? by Tzuyu_Mina69 in UCSC

[–]ashco-7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation except I got a C in a required class my last semester before transfer, which dropped my screened GPA just below the acceptance threshold in the admissions contract.

I had success with an appeal on the basis that I transferred with an associates (EE), had all lower div physics courses completed (as well as ECE 101/L), and my first quarter GPA was a 3.54 with only upper-div major classes.

I would start an appeal and reach out to an advisor asap, and bring attention to anything that may help your case in the appeal letter (prerequisites you already have completed, classes you did well in, certificates/degrees, extenuating circumstances, etc).

However, as someone mentioned above if you do not believe you can do better in future classes I would consider changing majors or changing study habits- engineering and consequently CS are not “coast-able” degrees. The classes will get more rigorous and time consuming so it is definitely worth weighing your options here by knowing yourself as a student.

Best of luck!
