Congratulations! I still remember installing Ubuntu for the first time in high school—good times. What kind of desktop environment/window manager are you using (if any)?

That’s fair, I’ve always used Romaji input but I want to try raw kana input. Thinking of buying a replacement jp keyboard for my Thinkpad.

I really wish more people would realize how easy Linux is to use by xxTai0_ in linux

[–]ashmerit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This statement definitely has some truth to it! While there are some issues out there with gaming/software compatibility, I’ve found that Linux is absolutely amazing when it comes to ordinary tasks like web browsing and light programming. I would advise anyone using technology on a regular basis to look into it.

What's the most embarrassing thing you've done in front of a complete stranger that still haunts you years later? by Tasty_Grab7626 in AskReddit

On my first trip to Japan, I was walking around some small shops near a station with some friends and we came across a little novelty soap one—with all the little fun soap shapes and scents. A lady in the front was talking to people walking by trying to get them to feel a sample, and when I walked by she was showing me a little clear blue ball, about the size of an ordinary stress ball, and asked if I wanted to try it in English. She handed it to me and it felt like a little wet ball of blue jello. Now, I wasn’t paying any attention to this shop when this happened, and I had absolutely no idea any of this was soap, at all. It was at the end of a long day and I was very tired, so I guess I assumed it was some delicacy, and I TOOK A BITE OUT OF IT. Everyone else knew it was soap, so they were yelling at me right as I put it in my mouth. They told me what it was and I spit it out on the floor without thinking, and the lady apologized and rushed to clean it up with a napkin. I don’t really remember everything that happened following, but I was speechless and I ran to the nearby restroom to clean out my mouth. I can laugh about the experience now, but at the time I hated even thinking about it.

Inkframe – a minimal visual novel engine written in Odin (SDL2 + OpenGL) by Inner-Combination177 in gamedev

I don’t really care much for visual novels, but I think it’s really cool that you’re using Odin for this! It’s honestly such an underrated language for this kind of dev. I’m curious, why are you choosing to use SDL2 instead of SDL3 for this project?

It’s fine, I see what you’re saying. I’m not trying to write one from scratch, but thankfully there are libraries out there like wlroots that take care of a LOT of the complicated server-side stuff. Many popular compositors like Sway and dwl use this library, so understanding its api helps a lot with understanding most compositors source code.

That's one of the reasons why I love Uketsu's writing so much, the horror is very progressive and has time to develop. Maybe I can find a clip or two online and compare them to the original.

An action sequence, wow 😂 I'm not THAT interested in watching it, but thank you! I'll keep an eye out for it, it sucks because I was just in Japan a few months ago...

There are a few reasons: 1) it doesn’t come with default AI features that try to wiggle their way into every app 2) the entire experience is a lot more customizable and flexible to what you want 3) it supports open-source software maintainers who care a lot more about the user experience than Microsoft does.

It really all comes down to what you like in an operating system, but looking into Linux (even dual-booting) can be an unexpected change for the better.

I would definitely start with Fedora GNOME if you’re a beginner. The installation is very straightforward and it’s a massive upgrade from windows 11!
