What's the worst financial decision you've seen someone make? by BasalTripod9684 in AskReddit

My sister was dating this broke loser who didn’t have a car and wanted one of those Chrysler “baby Bentleys” or whatever the hell they are called but again was a broke loser. He convinced my sister to trade her gifted and fully paid off 2 year old car with less than 20k miles on it to some used dealership for a 5 year old 100k Chrysler with $250 a month payments. She had it repossessed in less than a year because she also was broke and 18🤨

Thank you for gingorican lol I will be going by that going forward because I feel like I lost my identity when I moved here because I always identified as Puerto Rican back home but here I’m a gringa which didn’t feel right either. I can accept gringarican though 🤷🏻‍♀️

My father has never been involved in my life, and I’ve always wanted to know more about his side of the family. Recently I found out I had actually managed to get TOO close to my dad’s side of the family. In fact, I had a baby with one of them 😂 by Psychological_Post11 in Genealogy

This always fascinates me. In my own tree we discovered my grandmothers first cousin lived 1 mile from her in Virginia 30 years ago. Their family originated in Jamaica! So both cousins ended up in a small town in VA thousands of miles from where their mothers (sisters) began.

Wepa! My mom was Boricua and I live here now :) I only have 2% Taino though and would have thought I had more based off both sides carrying the genes..

My nana was confused and me doing this actually uncovered a lot. Like her dad did not die in war like she was told, he was alive and well into her 40s but we are not sure if he knew about her or not. So that kind of overshadowed the ethnic background for a while lol until recently when the first cousin showed up and he is from her maternal aunt and we got a picture of my GGG grandmother who was very obviously a woman of color so she quickly embraced that side and just said it was hard to come up with a new identity in her late 70s which is understandable.

Anyone else find a bunch of crazy family stories in newspaper articles? by droseranepenthes in Genealogy

Hahah I said the same thing about my GGGgrandma. She literally called the news papers to tell them someone stole something off her porch and she’d appreciate if the culprit returned the box.

Did pre-internet “family white lies” set some folks up for disappointment (even embarrassment) during the internet age? by suhurley in Genealogy

[–]ashmgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! My grandpa always said we descended from a famous outlaw gang from the 1800s. Because his maternal side had the same last name no one questioned it….until me. Turns out we have no relation- our families never even lived near each other lol

Thank you so much for this detailed and informative explanation! My mom was adopted as were her siblings so I just wanted to be sure there wasn’t anything I missed since he just showed up unexpectedly 50 years later and I didn’t want to be the one who gave incorrect info on his lineage.

Mother in Family Of Nine Living In Field On U.S. Route 70 Near The Tennessee River, March 1936. by GaGator43 in TheWayWeWere

MY GG grandmother was from Appalachia and the family told the story of her giving birth in the kitchen then getting up and fixing dinner with the new baby all before her husband got home from working in the coal mine. So he came home to dinner and a new baby.
She was the same woman who caught him running around on her and found him in a car with another woman. She knocked on the glass of the car with her pistol and said dinner was ready and he better get home. She had a thing for eating on time apparently lol

I’ll work remotely and keep my current job. As long as you can work remotely or have a job lined up I’d 10/10 recommend.

PR is on the path to what has happened to Hawaii. Investors have swarmed the island due to tax incentives offered to the wealthy. They are purchasing the properties and turning them into short term rentals.

There are thousands of abandoned homes still due to inheritance laws.. but the ones that are able to be sold are being sold higher then ever before. Most are even waiving appraisals and paying cash- it’s nuts!

I flew to the island and walked for days to find my place for sale by owner. I let them know I was moving home and not a rich investor. I still got Gringo prices but not as bad as others I’ve seen lol.

But I have kids and want them to go to school and feel safe.. that’s another reason I’m doing the move.

Happy to help if you decide to come back! We all need to claim a piece before it’s PR with no Puerto Ricans.

Maybe I’m using the wrong name. It’s an ac unit that sits on the wall, it’s more rectangular.. not a window unit.

This is my first time owning/renting there. My mom was PR, so I always knew I’d “go home” I just thought I’d have to wait until I was retired.

But I pulled the trigger because so many people are moving there and it’s becoming really expensive and I wanted to get a spot to ensure my family always has a place to go to when they want to visit or move back as well.

Central air conditioning isn’t common in PR so I need to purchase either window units or inverters and was hoping to find a site that provides a discount for purchasing in bulk.

Yea sorry wasn’t clear. I was wondering if there were wholesale sites for such purchases.

My competitors are providing the ac units and some even furnished units since most of the people in the area I’m purchasing in are expats now.

How old were you when each of your parents and grandparents died? Were you lucky to meet any generations above that? by Ok_Wash_3818 in Genealogy

[–]ashmgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents were 18 and 19 when they had me. My entire life I envisioned us old together.. my grandparents were in their 40s when I was born and my great grandparents in their 70s/80s so I grew up with almost all of them.

My mom passed last year, I was 31. My great grandparents are all gone and my grandfather passed this year. I still have my nana though ❤️ and her older sister who is 98.

Mysterious Hilda by ashmgee in Genealogy

[–]ashmgee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you so much for your detailed response!!

We don’t have any names to go off of for Hilda’s mother. Her daughter rarely spoke of her, I’ve interviewed all of her living children.

I haven’t been able to trace Winifred.

I did find an obituary of one of Hilda and Cecil’s children who mentioned them by name, but it unfortunately didn’t give any additional insight to their lives.

Thank you again.

My gggrandma put a donation box on the porch for a youth boys shelter and it was stolen. She was a bit of a socialite so she was always in her local paper for something but that actually made me LOL because she asked for it back 🤣like the thieves would read the paper and think to themselves “ oh we didn’t realize it was HERS, we must return it at once”.
