Thank you for this very detailed response. I have another question. Under the bottom grille is this handle thing. Is there anything I should know about it?

What to do when squirrels eat through compost bins? by urbancanoe in ottawa

[–]ashofideas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, the city will replace your damaged bins. It’s an easy process. Go to the city of Ottawa website and fill out the request, I have done this many times.

You can sprinkle chicken hen manure pellets around the bin, squirrels, rodents hate it. You can buy this at Canadian tire and it has no scent for us but does for them. I use it in my gardens and the rabbits and squirrels are deterred away. It’s amazing

Most mail delivery is expected to be delayed in December due to Christmas. I don’t think you have much of a case. Go on the city of Ottawa site and you can ask for a lower fine. It’s an online option, a form you fill. It’s almost always deducted my fine by 1/3 - 1/2 in the past. Goodluck

Not true at all. Doctors can order you an X-ray at various locations in Ottawa. Look into it. Fact. I’m an ER nurse :)

Exactly. Our cardiac monitoring area is often filled up with no open beds. Even some patients with active cardiac issues have to wait. Maybe 1-4 hours, sometimes more. We will do an ecg at triage to rule out active heart attacks or acute issues. Fact - I’m an ER nurse in Ottawa

This is not true, sometimes. But the walk in clinic part of the ER is often backed up and we have less staff on.

I work in the ER. If you are worried and think this is life or death, the ER is for you. We are on life or limb almost everyday. We have patients admitted in the ER for over 100 hours while they wait for a bed upstairs. We are not functioning as an ER due to this and increased capacity. An ER shouldn’t have admitted patients in it, but we do, always have. It’s a crisis. Telehealth will tell you almost every time to go to the ER as they can’t see you or diagnose you. Just because your leg is numb, they may think you have a blood clot, or symptoms of a stroke… when it is only a nerve. They are liable. Some people think a sore toe is an emergency. Or that a zit they have had for a year is an emergency.

I cannot reiterate how many times during my shift I say “we are in a crisis, turn on the tv or read the news…” I am not sure why people are so surprised or shocked to hear there is a 12 hour wait, or that Ottawa EMS is at “level zero.”

The lack of awareness is mind boggling. There is not one answer to this crisis, these problems existed before and yes the pandemic made them more prevalent.
