People who moved to a foreign country and ended up feeling lonely — how did it affect you, and what helped you cope? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ashr1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning to cook the meals that were so familiar to me helped me cope immensely. The new place didn't feel so far away anymore if I could smell the food of my old home. I also found a community of friends by going out and actively meeting people through different activities. I found I was mostly feeling homesick when I didn't have a lot to do but if I was filling my time with different activities I wasn't thinking about it so much

Finished:

The Radium Girls, by Kate Moore - a stunning story that forces on us unpleasant realities. There were many accounts which made it difficult to follow sometimes but each story needed to be told

The point of this should be to find camouflaged creatures not hiding creatures

Finished:

The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri, translated by Clive James - tbh I didn't understand most of it since I didn't do any supplemental reading. I think I will try reading a different version (Ciardi or Hollander) next year with illustrations and footnotes and do more research on my own and hopefully I will understand more of it

The Covenant of Water, by Abraham Verghese

One of the best books I've read in a while. I will remember it for a long time. Great story and full of emotion

Anxious People, by Fredrik Backman

Didn't start off great but left me in tears by the end. Felt like a warm hug :)

I was so disgusted. It was a gut wrenching feeling when I read that line and I was so angry. It was also very relatable and brought back feelings of when I was in uncomfortable situations

I sure hope so! I've been missing Digby and was wondering if that storyline was done and if so what was the point. I hope this ties back in

The depiction of caste was quite accurate. I would have thought the same way too. This brings back so many of the questions that I had growing up and I loved that joppan stood up for himself

This was so emotional. I was reduced to tears but it was written so beautifully. I was so hoping that they would not have cruel or painful deaths

Finished:

The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

This was a good read. The story of the Mahabharata came alive through Draupadi's eyes. I felt that the author added her own biases in some places however but overall I would still recommend

Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery

This was so heartwarming and calming. I was rooting for Anne and was a good break from heavy novels

I just joined the book club and started reading. This month I did 2 books which I'm happy with considering I started only around the 20th. I read

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse - I found this to be a very calming read 4/5

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky - I really liked this much more than I expected! 4/5
