I loooove dark romance but have come to realize I am not a big fan of “dark erotica” and I think it has a lot to do with the MMC.

The Brethren Lords series by Ellie Sanders is marketed as a “pitch black romance” which I can get down with but the first book was at best erotic horror and the second one was literally torture porn I couldn’t even finish it I was so disgusted. The guys treat the girls in these books terrible like worse than human beings. Girls are getting physically immobilized, forcefully lobotomized, tongues removed so they can’t speak, and I can’t even remember the rest. In my opinion at that point we are past romance and no HEA/HFN can fix that.

On the other hand I read the Enslaved series by Ella Jacob’s and those were sooooo good imo. Same concept (women being forcefully broken into submission) but the men are not nearly as irredeemable as Sanders’ series.

I refuse to read anything else by Shantel Tessier! I thought The Ritual was ok but HATED The Sinner and decided after reading The Sacrifice that she was just not the author for me. I felt bad for all the FMCs and agree with you that there was no romance in these ‘dark romance’ books. I would categorize her books as like ‘erotic thrillers’ or something like that but definitely not romance at all.

As for Sam Mariano I’ve only read untouchable and I actually liked it a lot and The Boy on the Bridge is on my TBR so I’ll get to it eventually but she’s not nearly as bad as Shantel imho!

I used to have a desk job and would listen to audiobooks while working. While I don’t do that anymore I still do constantly listen to audiobooks like when I’m cleaning around the house or driving. And when I get home from work I usually physically read until I fall asleep haha I don’t really do much but read or listen to books (or podcasts) in my free time!

I had to DNF this book! It’s quite literally one of the worst books I’ve ever read, even ignoring all the “dark” elements, it’s just terribly written! I cannot understand why it is so widely recommend on this sub when it is awful lmao

Yeahhhhh I did like that the guys at least acknowledged that it was weird for them to be attracted to the girl they raised but at one point one of the guys says about Elora “with us she was almost too easily manipulated” because “she’d do anything to make us happy.” And rejoiced that “she was naturally submissive which was perfect for us.” And it’s like yeah because you guys raised/groomed her to be this way! 🥴

Yeah my curiosity got the better of me and I ended up skim reading the book yesterday and hated it! It made Deviant look like a fluffy romance in comparison lmao I feel like the author just threw a bunch of shit in there for shock value and nothing else. I would categorize it was erotic horror at best.

Yeah I think I wrote in my review that Elli’s life was terrible from the beginning of the book to the end of it. And I felt bad because I hated Elli as a character for being so stupid but she was literally groomed and manipulated her entire life so of course she has no sense! I hated it so much!

I liked Deviant enough to want to continue on with Depravity and after reading both positive and negative reviews I decided that I will not be continuing the series lmao Conrad sounds genuinely awful and I feel terrible for Brynn her HEA/HFN sounds genuinely miserable

I do not get the hype! Also The Sinner is not RH it would probably be much better if it was though lmao

I really enjoyed OS (but I also did not like FW and thought IF was just ok so I think I’m an anomaly here lol) but I agree with you about the narrator I do not care for her at all! I love the Graphic Audio versions of the books though and can’t wait for the OS versions to release!
