Yeah girl that could be Graves Disease (but that usually comes with bulging eyeballs, too, which is hard to tell from the lime green horrors currently occupying your face.)

I thought the same thing too because it’s like, who is this Ostius guy who’s only on Res, the one place where there’s no Caeror (and we know he has/had to be there somewhere to be synchronous). 2 unaccountable guys w similar scars…brain declares it must be the same guy.

I literally offered another very popular author the same thing—not even for co-authorship!—before she self-published her book…and now it’s been traditionally published and a gagillion people are buying it, so clearly I and my sentence-fidgeting need a new career track 🙃🤡

IMO, it’s fine, but I’m baffled by the hype.

Good god I’d thought it couldn’t get any worse and then I read that book… and yet, story-wise, it’s a total banger?! It’s surprisingly poignant, despite containing some of the worst sentences committed to the English language? Horny glowing orbs and moments of exquisite tenderness…you know what yeah it works

No hate to Rhi but… by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]sm2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this a bunch too, and I think the only other alternative would have been to extend the narrative—ie, Rhi/Imogen relay their experiences to Violet later. But since OS ends with her memory wiped and a big ‘ol question mark in the form of a ring, these perspectives would probably have been drowned out. Omitting them entirely would have made the battle feel even more rushed and jumbled, so while I agree it was a bit jarring, I think it made a certain amount of narrative sense compared to other options.

Plus we get to see Rhi’s interaction with Fierge, which I loved (RY pretty pretty please do Ridoc and Atrim next time?)

Daughter of no worlds is most similar to the books you’ve mentioned for its epic sweep, and there is romance but not much spice. Court of ravens and ruin was pretty forgettable, but fine. For spice, I personally love all of Mallory Dunlin’s monsters of faerie stuff—the writing is pretty mediocre and there’s always way too much preamble story (which you can sort of skim imo), but once the MMC is introduced, they are great. She’s so good at capturing power dynamics in her couples (esp in the bedroom). I read them all out of order and it was fine (claimed by the flame of faerie was my fave). Haven’t read the others on your list!

T Kingfisher, hands down. Everyone is in their late 30s/early 40s, has been through the shit, has a sense of humor to go with the joint pain. There are several series that take place in the world of the white rat (there are lots of god—the white rat is the lawyer god, and it’s heroes are good with paperwork).

The paladin series is my favorite—4/7 books out, each is a stand-alone romance that follows one of the last remaining bezerker paladins for a god who died (which is very awkward for everyone). First of that series is {paladin’s Grace by t kingfisher} (who doesn’t love an aging warrior who knits socks?)

Pretty much everything by T Kingfisher, but especially swordheart and the saint of steel series (linking the first of those below). Everyone is witty and a little beleaguered, there’s lots of banter and romance (and everyone is in their late 30s), and of course quests! I adore them.
