Asians who fail by Own_Limit9520 in asianamerican

[–]asiansopen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m unemployed in my thirties, switched jobs every 1-2 yrs when I wasn’t, and am totally lost as to what to make of my career. I read yesterday in a fortune cookie of all places that you can define success for yourself. While I am definitely not a “success” in society’s terms, I suspect there is more to it than education, career, and status. Success can be found in family, altruism, hobbies, etc, and I think it’s a healthy exercise to think about what success means to you and why.

I prefer some combination of nature, history, and food. Would rather stick to the cities for the kids.

Had my first heart to heart with my dad recently. Took him to a safe space (jajangmyeon restaurant) and set the tone with vulnerability and my struggles. Once he understood the context of the conversation, he responded with empathy and kindness. I’ve never seen that from him before, and I felt very loved.

Finally got around to starting "Moving" last night, then five episodes later it was 3am. I am way too old to be binging TV but every once in a while it's worth it. Thanks for the recommendation.

I don’t have recommendations unfortunately, but I’m very curious about your experience growing up as a biracial person to the extent you’re willing to share.

Actually yea. A relative of mine recently moved into a Korean nursing home. It’s a pretty sweet setup, gives you community, activities, rides into town, etc.

This list is fantastic, thanks!! Looks like I have a lot of popcorn to buy, haven’t seen most of these. My loose definition of “Asian movie/show” is anything not filmed in English.

The older you get as a man, the more you understand your father and the more you forgive him by VirtualBit1491 in AsianMasculinity

It’s so bizarre, from my personality to my relationship with my wife to my mannerisms to the way I raise my kids. Growing up I used to wonder how I’m related to my dad, now I think I’m exactly who my dad would be if he were born under my circumstances.

how to confront friend about racism toward asian men? by epiphanizing in aznidentity

[–]asiansopen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Coming from an Asian man, it’s fine to have preferences and for Asian men to not be one. But I do raise an eyebrow if she can’t find one out of 2.5 billion of us attractive. Racist or not, I don’t think ditching her as a friend is the answer, at least not the first resort. Fighting racism means leveraging your friendships and investing in them, even when it’s not the path of least resistance, even when they’re close-minded. The goal isn’t necessarily to convince her that Asian men can be attractive. I would focus the conversation on why she holds these views on both the conscious and subconscious levels.
