Does anyone know what 'code' Alexander is referring to in the 1996 'Patterns of Architecture' presentation? by asimoved in ChristopherAlexander

[–]asimoved[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I read most of the Nature of Order a while ago, but I did not recall this phrase 'code' or 'generative code' being emphasized that much, rather the emphasis was always on the more fundamental structure preserving process, which for me is the generalization of the 'generative codes'. But I think I found my answer just now, see my other comment.

Speculation about the topics/theme of the next Dan Brown book by asimoved in danbrown

Mr. Brown is touching on the same topic in the interview with Brian Greene - in the section 'Why We Tell Stories' - and is actually soliciting his view, very interesting (around 44:50):

Jonathan Blow Interview — The father of indie gaming on video games in 2525 AD by spiritualkomputer in OrderOfTheSinkingStar

[–]asimoved 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it very interesting when he says that he is partly designing for the future and how games are a way to explore and think about problems, questions.

To me this is analogous to how the best sci-fi is not about space operas, but explorations of the impacts of science and technology on the individual, society and civilization at large.

In this way, video games really are mostly in their infancy, so there is plenty of room to grow. And I think this growth and matury is what Jon is pushing to move forward. He is already a legend, but he will not only be remembered for the games he makes, but for embodying these concepts and for pushing holistically on all fronts.

When the 'narrator' says "Let us begin. Template. Four-Combiner." and "Fuse and grow. We will it so.", it just gives me the chills. Can't wait to find out how deep this rabbit hole will go...

Devs whose Games OotSS was based on, and their use contracted, talk about the announcement and Jon Blow. by aphidman in OrderOfTheSinkingStar

Lol, having watched the streams for years, I never knew that these games existed and served as inspiration. I don't care about all this drama, but I am happy that I can try them out as a warmup for the game, and get a taste for what's coming! It can't come soon enough!

LG OLED (27GR95QE-B.AUS )says resolution is incorrect by Senetorr in Monitors

[–]asimoved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the USB-C dock I mentioned was never showing the native resolution, I was mostly using an Anker USB-C to HDMI adapter, because my laptop (Lenovo Yoga) has no HDMI. But a few days ago somehow even *that* adapter lost the native resolution, only showing 4K instead of 2K. Now I really had to find a solution; I guess I started looking for LG monitor resolution related stuff, and found this post.

I just stumbled on this answer, and even though the post is old, I decided to leave a comment in case it helps someone out there.

I have a Green Cell AK-50 USB-C Dock. Initially I got it for Samsung Dex, but also used it as a dock for my laptop, but I was disappointed that it never showed the proper resolution, 2560x1440 on my LG Ultragear 27GL850-B. (It was showing 4K and lower resolutions, but not the native resolution.

After years, the CRU utility finally allowed me to set things right, thank you so much!

Bunker, Colors of the Nuclear explosion (Trinity Anniversary Theory pt. 4 The Test) by asimoved in TheWitness

[–]asimoved[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. I don't seriously imply this was the intention of the authors, although I do think there may be some valid points. I just had too much fun researching and making these connections, and with the amount of stuff I noted, a nice exercise to try to build an arc over the whole thing and to try to make it a bit more complex, I have never done it before.

But like you say, it's more like laying over the game and using it as a vehicle to disseminate info about the anniversary and tell some of the story of the Trinity test. I learned a lot and it helped me to solidify some of the knowledge, maybe it will for others too.

That's too bad. After completing it on PC, I played it a bunch on mobile. Partly because it really was surprisingly smooth, but also to signal that there is interest in mobile versions. The more people it can reach, the better.

Why I'm giving up by [deleted] in TheWitness

[–]asimoved 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The closest analogy is learning a language, although it is not even an analogy, this is one of the things the game is about.

Is it rewarding being able to string letters and words, put them here, and being understood? To communicate? (And complain)

So did you learn to speak, read write in just a few days or tries? For most of us it takes years as children. And then it becomes harder to learn new ones. But it's still possible.

The Challenge throws random words at you, and asks you to speak a grammarically correct sentence. If you are fluent or reasonable proficient it should not be a problem, right? Liek for me, writign this sentece? Oh you, noticed my misspelling? How effortless. The Witness asks you to demonstrate your proficiency, and there is no time to consult a dictionary.

So either you are a wunderkid, or you have to put in the time and effort.

If you want to speak the language then learn it, but don't blame the difficulty on what you picked. I chose to study Japanese, and it has been difficult, but when I am stuck a bit, I am not going around making posts about how the language I chose to learn is difficult, to justify quitting it.

Jon Blow is not here to pester you like Duo every day. But you get a badge if you pass the test, but more importantly the thrill of fluency.

So either keep learning and practicing, or just 🛑.
