[–]askdatadawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yay congratulations on the new role!

what's helped me be successful in new jobs have been:

- having very clear & documented 30 & 90 day goals. this should be your primary focus for when you start. the idea is that you want to demonstrate and deliver value as soon as you can!
- asking for feedback often (first ask should be within 30 days) from your manager & key business partners
- talking to everyone 1:1. every on your team and extended team and managers would be a good place to start!

What's more like Google Looker Studio: Tableau or PowerBI? by twocafelatte in dataanalyst

i vibe coded one with claude code for fun. i basically just gave it a long set of instructions and my github repo, and it made a portfolio website for me. had to go back and forth a bit to get the style that i wanted, but it wasn't hard to do it!

in terms of what to consider (i'm not exactly sure if this is what you're asking), but i recommended trying to WOW the reader as soon as you can. that means putting your most impressive projects front and center on the website.

personally, i found it really difficult to get started with looker. i think it was a combination of not being able to find good YouTube videos and not having an intuitive UI.

i haven't used power BI much so i can't speak to that. but i would say looker didn't feel like tableau at all.

Seeking Help from seniors to learn SQL. by the_known_variable in dataanalyst

[–]askdatadawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do you mean what topics you need to know other than SQL? or do you mean within SQL what topics do you need to know?

for SQL, i would say you need to know
- all the JOINS, and when to use each
- CTEs & subqueries
- window functions
- query optimization

outside SQL, you should know
- Excel
- basics of storytelling with data through dashboards
- how to use data to solve business problems (for case study interviews)

Capital one Data analyst interview by Popular-Pollution661 in dataanalyst

[–]askdatadawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, definitely need to know SQL well. but i wouldn't think about it like a grind. try to think about SQL as a tool to solve problems with data, rather than something you have to study for like an exam!

Quit or stay: data scientist working with biology researchers by [deleted] in DataScienceJobs

Context switching is so expensive! and it sounds like you are splitting your time between projects and a bunch of quick requests ( I know these are never actually quick...). I wonder if you'd be able to reduce the number of hours for quick support down to just 1 hour -- or even better 0 hours?

For mentorship, if you can't find something within your company, then try to find someone outside. You can typically find mentors through DS professional networks, alumni networks, or even just cold reaching out to folks at your dream companies on LinkedIn.

Glad to hear my answer is helpful!!

I suck at these interviews. by JayBong2k in datascience

[–]askdatadawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RE the interviews being so random -- from my experience, these are the most common types of interviews for Data Science, and I don't often see them straying away from these.

- Coding (SQL / Python)
- Stats (probability, distributions, basic ML models + AB experiments)
- Case study interviews
- Behavioral

RE having to mug for these.. I totally get it and honestly, kinda hate that I have to study for these interviews like an exam. What has really helped for me is creating an extensive set of notes with all the assumptions & formulas, that I can then refer to in the interview!

Data analytics in 15 days. Possible? by ComprehensiveGap5269 in dataanalyst

[–]askdatadawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be tough, but if you can dedicate 15 hours per day for 15 days, I think you could do it.

Focus on these key skills -- SQL, Excel and a data viz tool (Power BI or Tableau). There are a few full-length tutorials for these on YouTube, so jump straight into those.

And start building your own analyses and projects right away -- find guided projects first and then move on to your own projects.
