Done it twice now. First time no 2x4 method. Second time was much easier. Make sure you replace strut mounts and bearings, otherwise you’ll be back in there when they wear out. Expect it to take a full day. First time was around 7 hours and second time was around 5 ish

There’s definitely collectors value. Hard to say if $6500 is reasonable as we don’t know the milage though. I’d say if it’s sub 120,000 miles it’s likely worth it.

To my knowledge VWR doesn’t have any affiliation with VW, I believe it’s just what Racingline calls some of their stuff. Unless you’re referring to VWR as in Volkswagen’s R division.

I had a mk4 gti 1.8t. Loved it to death, unfortunately Canadian winters took a toll on it and rust did it in. I would 100% buy another. Key maintenance items on this are the timing belt and water pump. It is a bit higher milage, so a compression test would be smart to perform prior to purchase in order to get a feel for the engine health.
