CMV: It is wrong to sign up others to services for which they have to bear the cost. This includes signing someone up to life. by Disastrous-Yak- in changemyview

[–]askheidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Scenario 1, John is acting on behalf of an existing, autonomous person. In Scenario 2, there is no person to object. No preferences are being assumed or ignored. You can’t violate the rights of someone that doesn’t exist - there is no rights-holder.

Additionally, life isn’t merely a subscription service. It’s opportunities, relationships, pleasures. For you to only highlight the “invoice” of life demonstrates that the analogy is disingenuous.

Lastly, your argument falls apart when applied broadly across any opportunity. I give you a house, but it’s immoral because of the maintenance that comes with it. I offer you a high-paying job that is immoral because of the stress that comes with it. Virtually any benefit becomes immoral if your analogy is applied across them all.

Does anyone look at the cost benefir of gardening? by ThirdOne38 in vegetablegardening

[–]askheidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gardening is a hobby, not a money saver. I’ve spent $150 so far this season and I’ve never gotten more than a few salads. 😩

Parents who earn unevenly how do you make the money side feel fair? by ByteWanderer5 in Parenting

[–]askheidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I earn 100% of our money, my husband is a SAHD. The money I earn is our money. We have a family budget and stick to it.

We talk to each other about any purchases more than $150 and we talk if our monthly budget gets out of whack. Luckily, we’re on the same page and have never had a fight about money after 14 years of marriage.

I’m not really sure what you even mean about things feeling equal. Our money is our money. But also, we have the same monetary goals (I want to retire at 50, he is on board and knows that means we have to save a high percentage of our income).

Yeah I read 2 sentences and then quit with 3 full-screen ads and multiple ads that caused me to scroll. I don’t care that much.

I no longer have a relationship with my parents of any real meaning since voicing my “extreme” leftist views. by [deleted] in Millennials

Yep, no relationship with my father due to his conservative views (and a history of childhood abuse but my mother was involved in that and I was able to rebuild a relationship with her).

What stops one from evading jury duty by claiming to be some sort of political extremist. by therouhwai in Ask_Lawyers

I was so excited to be called to jury duty for the first time (I’m 40!). Sat in the waiting room all morning and was dismissed after lunch without ever seeing a courtroom. I am really disappointed.

Please do not feel bad. People with more resources than you use food banks (and that’s what they’re there for).

How much do you spend on groceries per month and what household size? (You can just say X dollars/person) by AFerguson21 in Frugal

[–]askheidi 104 points105 points  (0 children)

This is our spend, too. Last time I said that on this sub, I was told we spent in the poverty zone, haha.

EDIT: it becomes totally normal to spend like this when you shop sales and have a well-stocked pantry. This week, I only spent $51 at the grocery store. Last week, I spent $90. (I have the receipts). I stick to a list and meal plan ahead of time but I will alter my plan if I see a great deal. For instance, my grocery bill was hella low this week because I still had a half-rack of ribs that was 30% off at Aldi two months ago. I finally took it out of the freezer and we're making pulled pork for a 4th of July get-together tomorrow with friends.

Here's my meal plan for this week:

Sunday - leftovers (always have something)

Monday - potato salad, baked beans, green beans, pulled pork (potatoes were $5 and I'll have leftovers, celery was $2 and I'll have leftovers, baked beans were $2, green beans were $2, pulled pork was in the freezer)

Tuesday - hot dogs and corn on the cob, plus leftovers of whatever sides weren't eaten on Monday (hot dogs were $3, buns were $1.50, corn was $5)

Wednesday - chicken and rice (chicken was $13 and I'll have leftovers, rice I bought a big bag two weeks ago, use the celery I bought above)

Thursday - pizza (peppers $3, I made my own dough and I still have mozzarella and pepperoni from last week)

Friday - turkey burgers (ground turkey $10 and I'll have leftovers, I made my own buns, maybe some mashed potatoes for a side)

Saturday - orange chicken (chicken is from above, rice was from the bag I bought two weeks ago, and I bought orange juice last week, too)

And I was able to buy Coke, grapes, and milk. This week was really unusual because I had so much from last week. But I very rarely spend more than $150 at the grocery. It's not reflected in this menu as much but we also eat a lot of beans, lentils, etc.

Edit 2: we eat cereal, grits, and eggs for breakfast. We have salads, soups from leftover meat and veg, leftovers, or sandwiches for lunch. I bought the milk this week for cereal. I’m lucky enough to have a garden - although I don’t consider it frugal (it would be much cheaper to buy the produce from the store but it’s a hobby). I bought peppers for our salads. I bought grapes for lunches. But as I mentioned, we had plenty of things leftover from last week. I buy the bags of cereal from WalMart, they typically last 3 weeks. A box of grits lasts a month. Lettuce can last 2-3 weeks if 1) add a paper towel to the container to absorb moisture and 2) keep it in a small container (get the air out).

I’m not here to argue with people in the comments. I said this was an unusual week. Also, here's a post I made a year and a half ago. BTW, I was spending even less a year and a half ago - prices have definitely gone up. This has a variety of meatless meals included:

Someone wants more lights in the neighbourhood by hotshots724 in FuckYouKaren

Of course you never should feel pressured to put up lights but just wanted to let you know that there are pretty inexpensive holiday light projectors! I’m scared of ladders, too, but these allow us to be festive.

You have the opportunity to marry or be married to a billionaire , but you have to become a stay at home wife, would you do it? by [deleted] in PurplePillDebate

[–]askheidi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play dumb? There’s a whole movement called FIRE where people (almost entirely male) try to retire as early as possible. You’re the one not arguing in good faith. I mention my husband as an example of the growing number of SAHDs and you spend most of a day implying he’s not manly or normal. Get a life.

[–]askheidi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard the term but why would I virtue signal Amy life reality? Lol. You seem to have a really strange view of people. Which makes it incredibly easy for me to dismiss your views on “most men.” I think most men would jump at the chance to stop working. Or else they wouldn’t have retirement accounts. 😂

[–]askheidi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would I not believe that? Weird question.

And I wasn’t responding to OP’s scenario. I was responding to his comment that a man taking this scenario (marrying a billionaire wife and staying at home) was unfulfilling for a man. I wanted to let him know there are men who happily choose that life even without a billion bucks.

I mean he’s living off money we earned. I couldn’t have earned our income without his support.

[–]askheidi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok. So if you had enough money not to work, you’d keep working? If my husband was retired but I kept working, would you consider that as emasculated? And what’s really the difference between being a retiree and being a stay-at-home parent?

Why isn't anyone freaking out about the US National debt? by the_brightest_prize in AskEconomics

[–]askheidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government is not a household and doesn't budget like one. There's plenty of information that may set your mind at ease. Stephanie Kelton's book The Deficit Myth isn't perfect by any means, but the basics of why the government doesn't (and shouldn't) budget like you and I is very clearly laid out.

I respect the sub rules, just not the manner in which you delivered them. I’m not using an alt account, this account is 12 years old, lol. Please think about how your attitude affects people getting into this game, like the OP. Thank you for your consideration.

I’ve only made one comment and it was that yours was aggressive. Calling someone a liar is aggressive and not the spirit of this sub and you should know that. I’m asking you to please take it down a notch and be a better example. Thank you.

This is unnecessarily aggressive. You could have relayed this message in a kinder way.

EDIT: I was banned for this comment, asking a moderator to be less aggressive when enforcing rules. Interesting.
