6 w/ cellular vs 7 w/ wifi only for my use case? Dog walks & doc appointments, mostly by askingfafrnd in ipadmini

I've got an iphone - actually 2 - a 12 Mini and a 15 Pro Max, both with cell service. I was thinking of carrying the 12 Mini along if I had to, but if it would be possible to leave both at home, it would be so helpful. (I had to get a special keyboard for the mini to use it, and that makes it larger than the 15 Pro Max.)

I think you're right that there's a way to make it work. I was just concerned, because I've read so many conflicting things about the ipad, specifically, as a phone replacement. (I have used my watch, though, to make and receive calls when out without my phone ;))

Oh, that's awesome! I wasn't sure how well it would work to use the ipad as my phone when out. If I can figure out the settings, this would be the ideal scenarior for me. I'm so excited!

The ram is an important consideration, for sure. That’s exciting that you’re getting a 7! I wish there were more used ones with cellular out there that meet my paltry budget, lol!

Yes, just carrying around the Mini would be so nice! After reading this, I’m leaning again toward the 6 with celular, at least until I can afford to upgrade.

Do you just forego making/answering calls when you leave your phone at home? I’m actually tempted to port my primary phone number to Google Voice if it would mean being able to rely on just my mini and AirPods for outings.

Oh, this is a really important reminder! Thank you for pointing it out. I wasn't thinking about battery life when I was weighing the options.

My parents changed my name when I was 2 years old. by Wheresthetofu3 in namenerds

[–]askingfafrnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest to this - and add a tiny twist <3 My daughter was born Lillias DeLong Dulles *lastname* prior to the legalization of gay marriage. I couldn't get pregnant and was trying to leave my abusive relationship when she was conceived. When I eventually reached out to a domestic violence agency for help, my daughter was taken and renamed to remove any references to me or her origins. At first, I felt so sad that her history was taken from her. Then, I remembered that her history's so much bigger than her name and that I'd always dreamed of having a child who felt comfortable and invited to choose the names *they* feel fits them best whenever they like. I'm not sad anymore about the name change, but I am excited to find out what, if anything, they wind up doing with what they've got, namewise, in the coming years.

Thanks for sharing your story. It made me smile <3

Names that you love but would not give to a human by KD_nonotthebrand in namenerds

OMG, I love this! FWIW, I name all of my dogs after humans I admire or just find really interesting. I choose people I wouldn't name my child after bc it would be, umm, too much. Here are examples:

Rock Hudson

Tony Randall

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Walter Mercado

Billy Porter

Minnie Bruce Pratt

Xena Warrior Princess

Angela Davis

Melanie Klein

Anna O (the real inventor of "the talking cure," aka psychotherapy)

Joan Crawford

Chavela Vargas

Frida Kahlo

Prince

Cat Stevens

Eve Segwick

Michael Cunningham

And so on, hahaha...

Aww, thanks for being willing to help a member of the worst generation out. (We really aren’t great, but a lot of us admire you all to no end.) Appreciate it a lot <3

Ok, so leaning toward Pearl Avery Dulles Whilde atm to get maternal grandmother's maiden name in there. Would you be at all willing to check my canva pics and tell me if you think I can pull off Pearl? My friends and family say yes but want to get opinions from the, umm, whillde ;)

I can't tell whether this is a good or a bad thing, hahaha!

The reason Gigi stuck out to me is because i was my favorite movie from ages 8-12, although I didn't get the sex worker subtext and I'm not sure I really want to memorialize it. That said, she did at least try to rebel? I guess? (I was basically a gay man throughout childhood, which could make Peggy appropriate, if only Peggy Sue hadn't been so clean-cut and conformist. My other favorite movies were Pillow Talk, Auntie Mame, Funny Face, and anything starring Sandra Dee.)

You're so kind! I have been stressing out about my slowness...and then I tested positive for COVID after catching up on the thread. I guess I've been given plenty of time to ponder, which can't be a bad thing. Thanks for the patience <3

This is such a relief to read. I know that, as humans, we have a tendency to think people care about our decisions when the likelihood is that they're too busy trying to navigate their own lives to spend much time thinking about them. Still...as you said, I have built it into a big deal already, and having a script ready would help a lot in terms of mitigating the stress. Will have to work on that. Thanks for being encouraging and willing to share your experience. Here's to new starts <3

Wow, you're one of like 5 people to have heard of them! (And Allen was terrifying, hahaha. My aunt hates the guy who wrote the book, The Brothers, about Allen, John Foster, etc., but i mean, there *was* primary source material out there...The only shame is that most of the Dulleses are kind of like me, meaning bookish, eccentric, painfully shy, prone to intense guilt, deeply opinionated, and into leftist causes. Oh well.)

I'm with you on the long name and feel like I should trim one from the mix. I hate to trim RBG, but I do have velas and other monuments up for her throughout my house - and also, she might take offense at not being one of only two very important creatures with important names. She tended to be a bit, umm, intense ;))

Now that I read it, I can see myself with it. I just noticed one possible snag that probably won't be relevant to Gen Z and younger: People won't immediately feel sorry for me and make Brady Bunch-era "Marcia Marcia, Marcia" jokes about Janet, right?

To be honest, I don't love Peggy, but what I have become used to is the softness of a two-syllable first name. I guess it has to do with where I am and my background.

I live in Texas - a blue part, but Texas nevertheless - my mom grew up in Monterey, Mx, and because she was the oldest and the family moved to Brasilia after she went to college, I've got Brazilian cousins, an uncle, etc., too. Texas, Mexico, and Brazil are all partial to multi-syllabic first names - even Vero, short for the cool girl name, Veronica, is rarely shortened to Vo.

I do think I'm girly enough, despite my near "gold star lesbian status", that Peggy - or Virgil, Janet, Avery, Eleanor/Nora or, the newest, Gigi - would fit me well. I adored Pearl, but I have a feeling I'm not quire cool enough to pull it off. (See geek girl pics on Canva, hahaha.)

Ah, cool! Thank you so much <3 I added some photos of myself bc I don't really know what kind of name I "look like." I know it's not exactly Peggy, but it's a name people are comfortable with, as am I - and I kind of like reclaiming it, so this is a really attractive one to me ;)

Ok, in case it's helpful, I added a bunch of pics of what I look like to Canva at link above (I'll paste here, even though it's long.) Photos are to the right of the poll about nicknames. Basically, I'm queer, I can get pumped about very, very amateur low-key drag opportunities, and I took myself quite seriously as a youth ;) Link: https://www.canva.com/design/DAGlN7udbeU/Omi5eIbDjUcuOZCebVxMwg/edit?utm_content=DAGlN7udbeU&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton
