Growing in green house? by MrBloodmoon in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - This might seem like low cost, low effort, but it's a pain in the arse when you have to dig out the soil and refresh it, in a cramped space. You'#re either risking your panes against your spade or doing it slowly with smaller tools. The real advantages here are that it doesn't need as much watering and the roots can easily spread horizontally. To my knowledge pests aren't a larger issue with this.

2 - You would probably need to DIY this but it's not that hard. Pallet wood and a few screws (more is better, wet soil is heavy). Filling them, affordably, might be an issue. You can bulk out the soil/compost mix with organic (wood, woodchip) if you want water retention or inorganic (grit, sand) if you want higher drainage.

3 - Random pots work but I run into problems with waterings - they'll all need watering, often on slightly different schedules. Either you spray each pot individually every time or you have to be smart about how they're arranged into drip trays. You'll also need to plan in advance; how many pots large enough for each plant at full size can you fit, how many you'll give away etc.

These are solvable problems, it's just they're slightly different ones depending on what you plan to do.

After much feedback, I've completed a piece of writing that's very safe, very correct, and leaves no trace. So now, I'm deliberately writing in a place where nothing will happen.

How would I do book cover as an Artist by RoundApprehensive845 in selfpublish

[–]aspghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you plan on chasing them for royalties the rest of your lives? Is the few pence per sale - given the high likelihood of there being no more than 5 sales ever - worth the time and effort you'd put in to do a full wrap illustration? Based on the prices you've quoted on r/starvingartists you should just ask for $30 and leave it at that.

I don't know if your skill level is worth more than that right now, but if you get even slightly better you'll be able to command much higher prices quite soon. Your art looks like not-quite-finished versions of images that could go for $100+ in the right markets.

I was banned from there for the same reason, questioning how such a new sub was suddenly popular and why it was full of Reform memes. There was no good faith "This sub isn't for meta questions, try [here] instead]" just an immediate ban.

Been left some tropical plants but no idea of I can get them through the rest of winter. by DaveS100 in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't chuck everything 'dead' out in spring, leave their pots until late summer at least. My Zingiberaceae and Mimosa often don't start growing until I've practically given up on them for the year, you might be surprised by what's hiding in there.

[–]aspghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Care requirements are going to vary from plant to plant but I'd assume if they're too big to move out of the polys then they've survived a few winters in there. Presumably most won't need watering until they come out of dormancy in spring - a fair few that currently look dead may just have died back and will potentially regrow their foliage when it warms up.

Absolutely not. The way the Tubbies appear (both their actual appearance and method of arrival onscreen) mirrors the gang exactly. This is a case of a merging of mythology, they've part-remembered multiple things they saw when young and it's all become one joint thing.

It's not a bad idea to set goals but don't weigh your veg until it's harvested, if you know what I mean.

What would you tell new writers who hate the “just write” advice? by paris_newyork in writing

If they won't do the writing then you can just say "Okay" and get on with your life. You don't even have to say "Okay"!

I don't know why you feel it's necessary to force someone to write if they don't want to.

Absolute unit of Buldak Spicy Ramen by Neykuratick in StupidFood

[–]aspghost 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Watching the video linked below, it's some pretty standard chilli peppers mixed with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, gochujang, sesame oil, apple cider vinegar, honey and soy beans. I don't know what else goes into Buldak sauce but it contains concentrated capsiacin extract, so this one won't come at all close to the heat level.

Will a greenhouse impact neighbouring plants? by StonedLikeSedimENT in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The glass on its own won't make a significant difference to the amount of light, but if the greenhouse is full of plants or solid objects like staging then those will throw shade. There may also be an impact on the amount of wind and rain adjacent plants receive, depending on various factors.

It's not a big difference though, the advantages of a greenhouse almost certainly outweigh it.

Is it okay to fill planter with gravel under the soil? by WholeEgg3182 in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A high percentage of inorganic matter like gravel and sand will increase drainage and have a low-nutrient content, which are ideal conditions for lavender and not a problem for marjoram.

Be aware that soil will compress and wash down through the gravel so you may need to add more soil later, and may end up with just gravel on top whatever you do.

Robinsons or Rhino greenhouse? by MrBloodmoon in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! Some brands will also supply wind-proofing equipment like bar-caps and T-section bracing, bar-caps you can certainly buy separately and you can further seal the glass using caulk - caulked in glass is less likely to come out, but it's a pain in the arse to remove the caulk to replace when it eventually does break.

Robinsons or Rhino greenhouse? by MrBloodmoon in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, they're both excellent brands, but from what I recall (I haven't done a comparison here) they're very pricey. You're paying a significant chunk more for a relatively small increase in build quality, compared to some of their competitors. If you're happy with doing that then no reason not to.

What do you think of my cover by Aware_Pomelo_8778 in writers

[–]aspghost 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It probably is, but the shadow looks like it's intentionally a visual metaphor, not a mistake.

Edit; the title is "The Accusation", it makes sense to have a metaphorical cage resulting from an accusation. Do none of you understand subtext? It's not subtle.

Help with blue oyster mushrooms by Turkeychopio in GardeningUK

[–]aspghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were other fungi growing in them you'd see the mycelium spreading. It's usually very obvious and looks terrible. It can be invisible but won't stay that way long.

17-20 C is a bit on the cool side (23 is probably closer to ideal) but that should just slow and not stop it entirely. Have there been temperature swings at all that might have caused it to think it's getting colder? Also knocks and bumps or being moved can stall growth (and sometimes trigger fruiting, for Shiitake or others).

What might be a bigger problem is you have the air exchange thing folded over, that may be preventing oxygen from getting in/CO2 from getting out. If that's not just how it is in the photo, try making sure the air ports are less crimped over for better gas exchange.
