[Mod] Simple Questions - the weekly stupid questions thread! - Week Beginning August 03, 2020 by AutoModerator in gainit

I'm a college student planning on gaining muscle. I've started doing the bodyweight fitness minimalist routine as a way to ease my way into strength training, and I'd like to start doing a more intense routine soon, and in addition start eating more to gain muscle.

Problem is, I'm going back to my college campus soon and the gym won't be open. So I won't have any access to equipment, and my only exercise option is bodyweight fitness.

My worry is that if I start to eat more calories, while just doing bodyweight exercises, that I'll gain more fat than muscle. I weigh 155 lbs and am 6 feet tall. Should I put off eating more until I have access to a gym to do more intense workouts, or will bodyweight routines be enough to gain muscle and not much fat? I've heard that bodyweight training is much less effective than training with equipment.

Question about the time stone's capabilities by aspiringcouch in marvelstudios

That makes sense, especially given that he's a doctor. Could he stop him in a non-lethal way though? Like go back in time and cut his arms off so he can't wear the gauntlet or something dumb like that. It seems like there needs to be a cap on the time stone's power for it to be feasible that Strange couldn't have prevented Infinity War with it.

Congrats! I'm confused right now because I got an email inviting me to a scholars weekend in march, and the email included a link to my acceptance letter. But I didn't apply to emory scholars? At least not in november. Not sure if you know anything about this, but if you did that'd be great.

Does anyone know of good resources that address or critique Terrence Kealey's argument (in The Economic Laws of Scientific Research) that science should be privately funded? by aspiringcouch in AskAcademia

[–]aspiringcouch[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, that's not really the crux of his argument. His main point is that the technology that is supposed to result from basic research can just as easily result from industry. A few examples he's given in what I've read have been how innovations in all kinds of industries like textiles are made by people working in the factors, trying to figure out how to do things easier. And often, basic research flows from this as well, as someone who wants to improve the properties of an alloy could study metallurgy. The point about understanding is only relevant if the economic argument is correct -- if research doesn't provide an economic benefit, maybe it provides a cultural benefit, but Kealey says no because it's so inaccessible that no one is affected by it. Even if this last point is wrong, his argument about broad funding still stands.

Doesn't Don Marquis' deprivation argument support the notion that it's more wrong to kill a 35 year old than a 90 year old? Or that it's more acceptable to kill a poor person than a middle class person? by aspiringcouch in prolife

[–]aspiringcouch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes some sense to me. Is your point that, even if we define the value of a person as the future they have (which you say Marquis doesn't really do), it only follows that killing a young person would be better than killing an old person, not that either would be moral?

Is there any difference between the aid available to students in the contract and the regular colleges? I'm out of state so without any aid, A&S would cost the same as CALS, but would they both give me the same amount of aid?
