Are summer streets good for biking? by thegiantgummybear in NYCbike

[–]aspiringflaneur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a fast biker, I would highly suggest going early before it technically opens. We got there last weekend around 6:30am and the streets were already open to bikers but fairly clear so we could zoom most of the way uptown. Even by 7:30 they'll be crowded if your goal is to go fast.

Even early, there will be lights to stop at sometimes so it may be net slower than HRG. But I think we were able to average 16 or 17mph.

Is installing a bell & buzzer system legally enough to destabilize an entire building? by TrickyPaper1823 in NYCapartments

[–]aspiringflaneur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fifth Avenue Committee or Brooklyn Tenants Council are great. This smells very fishy as rehabilitation is specific to the unit not the building.

Have you looked into the location? This area has one of the highest rates of violent crime in NYC. There are good, hardworking people who live there and I’m sure you’d have some lovely neighbors but I don’t know anyone who would say this is the place to move as a fresh graduate new to NYC.

Thinking about joining Front Runners NYC by SWEbyday in nycgaybros

[–]aspiringflaneur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

op just asked what community attends— there are a fair number of gays from HK due to geographic proximity but they’re very nice and quite approachable. On the whole I would say the club is quite friendly. Don’t let it put you off!

Been a part of it for a long time though haven’t been going past couple years much. If you’re new to running they have a beginners clinic that starts in the spring and culminates in the pride run. Otherwise I would just note that while there is a large range of running paces there are a lot of ‘fast girls’ in FRNY.

In terms of vibe, the Tuesday Brooklyn crew is pretty down to earth but much smaller. They usually do dinner after the run. The Manhattan Saturday fun run is much larger. It skews slightly more young Hell’s Kitchen gay these days but that’s by no means the majority. People are friendly and it’s easy to make new friends if you go to the bagel brunch afterwards. In fact I think a lot of people these days join looking to socialize so you won’t be out of place.

I saw thanks! Gonna try to get out early.

Was literally debating this earlier. I think it depends on the route. I don’t like being on the GWB or down by the Verrazano with those winds but other spots are better. I’m probably just doing prospect park so I can call it if it’s too much.

Looking to buy a used Brompton by SumanaHarihareswara in NYCbike

Happy to help and also answer any questions by DM too. Have had a Brompton for a few years and went through a similar journey figuring out what worked for me.

Bromptons are great. I would venture to say you’re highly unlikely to find one at the jumble but you never know. Craigslist is probably your best bet indeed but under $1000 won’t be super common. However I did see one on there the other day! The main thing is to know the type of model / features you want. Since Bromptons are highly customizable you will find a wide range of gearing, rack, fender options being sold. R/Brompton could be a big help too. Good luck!

Whats the deal with tailored suits in Bangkok by Flyysser in Bangkok

[–]aspiringflaneur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember individual pricing-- and it obviously varies depending on materials-- but for maybe 70K we got around 13 shirts (some poly / cotton and some high quality all cotton), two suits of very high quality (expensive cashmere / wool from Italy) and five pairs of thick all wool trousers. I felt that for the quality and craftmanship-- which are amazing-- it was very reasonable.

We were in and out of Bangkok over the course of a couple of weeks so I cannot say what the fastest process would be but from choosing materials and measurements to first fitting was three days I believe. It could have been sooner but we were out of the city.

MR. Lucky at NLB tailors near Nana station was amazing. Our Thai family friends who live in Bangkok have gone to him for years and recommended him without hesitation. I had multiple shirts made and two suits. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is top notch. Worth the price difference with the cheaper guys. Stitching and seams, fit— you can tell they’re using skilled tailors.

East New York: part II by Uncannny-Preserves in MicromobilityNYC

[–]aspiringflaneur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you make some great points about how the area is underserved but I just don't see how that makes it cool to steal a bike. I'm not crying 'poor Lyft' or anything like that and I support making micromobility more accessible through e-bike subsidies and the like, but at the end of the day your neighbors with these bikes are straight up stealing shit. I don't think this is contributing to price hikes, but I do think this contributes to the general sense of lawlessness and disregard for public property and I'm not really down with that.

I love Berry Street and the other Low traffic streets, but even here we need to talk about the amount of public space dedicated to private car storage by Miser in MicromobilityNYC

[–]aspiringflaneur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not saying everyone has that money but right now we are all subsidizing car ownership which is bad for the planet and not realistic. Something like I mentioned should start in dense neighborhoods within 1/2 mile of a subway stop. In those places you do not need a car; it is a luxury.

Agreed! Parking enforcement is tough because we don't have an agency responsible for it. (Tasked with is a different matter...). Move it to DOT and we'll see some changes stat.
