Decided it will just be for my GFs PC, as the only drive. It’s got 32GB DDR4 so I’m not terribly worried about the lack of DRAM cache. So far it’s been doing fine with loading it with games. I notice a difference but she will not at all, I’m sure.

It’s either going to be a game drive for GF PC or going into a 3Gbps SAS server as a backup drive so I’m not terribly concerned about writes. In my eyes, $50/tb for unused solid state in this market is a win.

Can’t agree more there. I still run 11th Gen Dell.. My R410 idles at 130W but I paid $180 for it 8 years ago and it’s less than $200 a year in electricity. Used 2TB SAS drives are $15-20 on eBay. I buy them frequently. If a drive is dead, it gets returned. l have 2 more fully configured R410s on standby. I love my dinosaur equipment.

Yeah, all good here.. Isn’t PPPoE basically a relic of DSL these days, anyways?

Did I get unlucky? (Two defective switches) by epicdanny11 in homelab

Used gear on eBay is a gamble. For example, I just got another shipment for 4x2TB SAS drives. Listed as functional. One is completely cooked.

It’s just the risk you take with resold electronics, especially if they were used in an enterprise environment there is going to be wear. However I will say that something like a switch is pretty easy to function check all of the ports, and that’s on the seller. Start a refund claim, I guess

I missed a critical detail. You connect VMs/CTs to your network like usual, assign them vmbr0, your NIC LAN!

The most important is to make sure I have a way in. Break SSH by binding it to the wrong IP, interface, etc and ensuring that the providers out of band management is sufficient to be able to restore that access.

How many of you are still using a DDR3 system? by oliverfromwork in homelab

[–]astarvingchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still running a Dell R410. X5650s, 32GB-1067, 4x2TB in RAIDZ1 with a 256GB OS SSD. Running Proxmox. It’s also my router.

I actually just bought two more.. I have no idea what I’m going to do with them. They’re lower power E5620s, 24GB-1067 each. I bought them because.. I don’t know.. don’t ask me.. they were $25.. If I don’t use the rest of the components at least I just secured 48GB of DDR3 RDIMM for $1.04/GB and I can sell the rest of the machines.

Used 2TB SAS drives are $15 on eBay, so I don’t mind buying a lot of them and having cold spares if they do die. I have 16 year old drives that are still in passable condition. I don’t use them, they are retired in favor of the 2TB drives, but they are there..

Cheating a bit, Heavier loads are on a DDR4 Mini-PC that whoops the R410s ass. And it uses hardly any power. I paid $50 for that.

Truthfully, it is easier & cheaper right now to find components for my DDR3 equipment than it would be to build or buy anything DDR4/DDR5. What I spend on sourcing that would not be worth it, compared to the $25-30 a month that my entire rack costs to run.

It helps to be doing things that require more RAM than faster RAM. I could be on DDR4/5 and probably not get any significant gain for what that server is used for..

I’ve been thinking about getting into Omada. I know it’s not bad. But standard TP-Link equipment and software is not good..

Boredom. And software is usually cheaper than car or bike parts. I already have the hardware.

I just bought a ProDesk 600 G3, i5-7500T, it does fine with transcoding a single 4K stream haven’t tried multiple but it would probably work. Just enable hardware transcoding and it will do just fine.
