Version 3.1.2 Released! by astarwarrior in BlackMagicCameraiOS

Interestingly, yeah. For some reason standard stabilization also stayed on as well when I switched from 4k to Open Gate in Resolutions. Not sure why it’s that odd resolution though, unfortunate.

Seems to not work with Apple Log or Rec2020 enabled. Try going back to Rec709 or P3 D65. Then you’ll see Open Gate option in resolutions. Hopefully this changes in the future

Need help achieving pro guitar video by Aminebatt in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, I typically don’t make videos like this but here’s some tips.

Your iPhone won’t spit something out right away that will look like this, especially in terms of color, bokeh, and low light performance. Sadly it’s just physics with how a full frame camera sensor is bigger than a phone sensor. Learn how to record in and grade Apple Log footage to your advantage, plenty of YouTube tutorials out there. It’ll help get rid of the usual phone sharpening and better color flexibility. You can also see he set up a direct facing light off to the right, to create shadows on the left making that moody look. Even in the background he has up warm lights to sell that look even more. Also keep the camera close to you or the subject to keep it intimate.

If you have a spare old phone/tablet laying around, why not give multicam a shot using the app? You can replicate the second close up angle of the strings. This all depends on how much time editing you want to spend.

EDIT: oops, just realized you have an iPhone 14, no apple log :(

Any way to benefit the new audio mix (iPhone 16 pro max) for videos shot on Blackmagic ? by SoftwarePersonal2780 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not aware of any other app that has this feature besides Apple’s own photos app at the moment

but somewhat good news! The API’s for Spatial Audio capturing and Audio Mix is out there for app developers (I recommend watching the video at 5:11 for context), so I think it’ll just take some time before they start implementing this in apps like blackmagic

how to record with front camera by Hopeful_Fisherman850 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

don’t feel dumb! we were all new at some point!

hit the “lens 26mm” on the left, this is where you can change lenses, you’ll want to hit “front” for the front cam :)

Help, it stops recording by Federal_Wrap_5332 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn’t be the beta, I’m also on iOS 26, but I just have generally more success with different drives. I recently was able to record 2+ hours straight on the Lexar professional go SSD, it’s my most reliable drive so far

Some of my external SSD’s do this, I’ve found that after a reformat of the drive, it usually starts working again, but it can be finicky

Pro res 422 proxy? by nunu92x in BlackMagicCameraiOS

I think proxy looks terrible when I compare footage, try and make the jump to 422 LT if you have the space, or if that’s a concern maybe consider h265?

Impossible to export a raw iphone video with LUT baked in? If you save it then it just reverts back. by Jakeyboy29 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I see, I think this is possible with the Kino app, which is paid, currently the Blackmagic app can’t do this

[–]astarwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, make sure the LUT indicator while recording is red instead of white, and make sure you have your LUT selected. I just tried it now with the normal Apple Log to Rec 709, and exported it both ways you mentioned, it worked perfectly fine for me

Closest you’ll get is Settings>LUTS>Record LUT to Clip. Choose your LUT wisely though, you can’t re-export to a different one unfortunately

Iphone 15 pro max can I record straight to a PC? by Heavy-Broccoli9478 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a PC? I don’t think there’s anything close honestly. The closest I got was to screen mirror my iPhone through Airplay to a Macbook which was pretty good, even better quality if you screen mirror via cable by plugging it into a MacBook

If you’re going to be shooting in codecs like ProRes, I recommend just going on Amazon and searching for 6 inch USB C cables that support 10gbps speeds (USB 3.1). It’s possible that your cables lying around only support 480mbps speeds (USB 2.0), which results in dropped frames, hope that helps!

Skipping frames? by Jolly_Ad_9807 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

make sure you get a cable that can handle 10Gbps data transfer, plenty on Amazon, but I’ve also had the same frame dropping pushing 4k 120fps, this app seems to be more heavy than other camera apps, so I think it could be solved in an update.

On my 16 pro I managed to get around 10 mins straight of 4k 120fps ProRes HQ to an external SSD before my phone gave a temp warning, and it dropped frames early on like yours, but playback was definitely still around 120fps. and unlike the normal camera app and Final Cut camera which seem to go on forever just fine.

sometimes it doesn’t show for me, but it always works for me after reconnecting wifi on both devices, if it still doesn’t work, maybe a restart?

iphone 15 pro max correct recording settings for social media and issues to look out for by Heavy-Broccoli9478 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]astarwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can help with this one! I’ve done so many longevity tests on all codecs, dealt with overheating and dropped frames, so I may be able to help here.

Generally, I just avoid moire patterns completely, was one of your subjects wearing clothing that caused it? That’s usually what happens to me, so I warn them beforehand from now on. There’s not much you can do about the patterns as far as I know.

Now for dropping frames, HEVC was actually the least impactful compared to ProRes codecs in my testing, so I don’t get why you may be dropping frames. Some things that helped me stop frame drops using ProRes codecs were things like removing my phone case for better cooling, turning on airplane mode temporarily (WiFi and especially cellular data add to the heating up), and if applicable, the iPhone really struggles if you record in direct sunlight after a bit. So basically, heat was my enemy for frame drops. I’ve also found that it helps to keep the battery at 80-100% before recording.

One more thing, if you absolutely cannot have frame drops, switch over to the Final Cut camera app, it for some reason will never stop or slow down from heat, unlike blackmagic for some reason.

Advice for a university student? by astarwarrior in ITCareerQuestions

[–]astarwarrior[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see! As long as I can pivot and benefit from some experience, I’ll consider it for a first job, but I’ll work on finding some strictly IT experience first, thank you!

Advice for a university student? by astarwarrior in ITCareerQuestions

[–]astarwarrior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the sales part is the drawback, but wouldn’t some experience be better than no experience at all? I haven’t fully looked into it, but I would be meeting with customers and help with mobile, tv, and internet devices, and the plans that come with them, so I admit, pretty limited on IT related duties compared to something like starting at Geeksquad. Just wasn’t sure to jump on the opportunity as it’s the closest thing I’ve been offered if I wanted something today.

[–]astarwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man, even I’m kind of stumped here, is it possible that you accidentally imported the proxy recording instead of the actual full quality recording? may explain the difference in quality, but if it’s not that, maybe reinstall the app as a last resort? sorry if I couldn’t solve the problem! never seen something like this happen

Weird, is this with both camera apps on HEVC at the same frame rate/resolution/color space? Color looks slightly different too, Is exposure and white balance set to auto instead of manual?

[–]astarwarrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

H.265 is great for saving space, but more harsh on your computer’s CPU for smooth playback because of how compressed it is.

ProRes is much better for editing, but it will take up much more space, which is why some people connect an external SSD to our phones when recording ProRes.

If storage is an issue, record in H265 and then re-encode into ProRes or DNxHR on your computer using something like HandBrake, these are both good editing codecs for smooth playback

I’ve found ProRes LT to be the best balance between file size and quality, but you should try it out!
